Fullbore Friday

OK Shipmates, this is a Fullbore Friday quiz. The answer is below the main picture, but will be in tiny print (don't scroll yet). Follow the links, you will be glad you did. Now, look at the below. Without cheating, look at it for 30 seconds then see if you can guess; (1) What caliber, (2) What KIND of warship it is on, (3) What nation is belonged to, and (4) What else was special about the ship? (here is a hint, what are those funny things on the end of the guns for?) Now, NO CHEATING!!! (yes, John, I am talking to you)

The French submarine Surcouf. Built in 1929 as a "underwater cruiser" she had twin 8" guns, and a gas tank you would dream about. She also had a seaplane and hangar to store it. Much like France itself, she contributed little to the allied effort in World War II, shot at Americans, was no threat to the Germans, was the source of rumors, was suspected of collaborating with the Germans, and ended up being either sunk by the Americans because they couldn't trust her, or was sunk in an accident. Great ship, interesting concept, superb potential; pissed away.
