What does "keeping the sea lanes open" mean to the average american? Not much.
How about "236 years of excellence. The world's oceans. Securing our way of life."
Not warrior enough, but better than the embracing the repeal of DADT before it's time, US NAVY GLOBAL FORCE FOR GOOD route they tried las time.
Here's a note to the head shed in the WNY...
Sailors really DO want to feel they are in the military. It's ok to embrace that ethos.
I'll bite. Message is improved, at least on to core misson. Wording could be be better to get point across to general public.
OK, editing / proofing department needs some work. Merchant (assuming) in the V must be more prevalant or gone.
Now, who owns the frigate in the front?
Good... but not great. Definitely an improvement, but it's still not good enough to be printed out/hung up next to the Swanson Pyramid of Greatness.
Looks like a T-23
LT - Agreed. I think the attached poster is one of the better of the last decade or so. Much more of a warrior ethos espoused in it, and very simply at that.
Yes, yes, and yes. That was a great poster. Especially when they did the music and voice over for the commercials. I forgot what music they chose, but it was suitably hard. The guy that does the voice overs is Keith David. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0202966/
That add campaign came out shortly after 9/11 and they wanted to cash in on that feel of service and defense. Then they went all squigly and sissified after that. WTF?! We don't need to keep reinventing ourselves. The Corps does a great job recruiting and they are pretty damned consistent in their message.
Cheap Wally World goods!
Looks Canadian or British. Not up on my foreign ship silhouette recognition.
I thought that was a GREAT ad campaign. This one isn't as good as that one, but I agree with the CDR that it's better than the previous "meals on wheels" campaign.
I like "Global Force For Good".
Rescuing people = Good.
Shooting terrorists = Good.
Shooting pirates = Good.
Bombing America's enemies = Good.
Taking America's enemies' land (in concert with the Marines) = Good.
Taking America's enemies' stuff as prizes (the old way) = Good.
Keeping the Trident of Neptune (which is indeed the Scepter of the World) in America's hands = Good.
It's all in how you define Good.

Operate Forward. Drown the Enemy in his own Shoal Waters.
I guess I will add, with a message that is not well defined - while heading in the right direction certainly - the mischtook of including a foreign navy warship means that:
1) In house Navy mrktng/ad/pubaf department needs to spend some time out of the office and see who has what ships.
2) Farmed out to outside mrktng/advrt firm that is missing a technical consultant or three.
3) Farmed out to outside mrktng/advrt firm, approved by Navy mrktng/ad/pubaf department needs to spend some time out of the office and see who has what ships.
So while this is in the right direction, message is not simple and bold enough, and some FAIL in the kit department.
""meals on wheels" campaign"
ROFLMAOPIMP!!!!!! 8-)
236 Years of Excellence. Securing America’s Freedom.
236 Years of Excellence. Tradition. Honor. Freedom.
Sorry - must be the flu medicine that is influencing me negatively. Here is a "Diverse" image with history AND modernity. It even has a neutered Perry in it.

It's not a bad start. Provided I see no more of those commericals that make the Navy into some gray-hulled Kiwanis Club, or have them out-NGO-ing the NGOs.
Sorry. Sounds awful similar to Moonbat Station NBC's (MSNBC) "Lean Forward" Ad Gimmick. Just my Two Cents.
Leaning is not operating. You can lean forward at the head of the pier in Norfolk.
So...what's the NEX going to do with all those "Global Force for Good" hoodies they've got on the shelves? ;)
236 years of ... Keeping Sea Lanes Safe, except around Somalia, the IO, Malacca, and places like that. Places where it actually needs doing. The unintended irony of this and the Dutch.
Burn them and never ever try to market wimpiness again.
They'll most likely be able to donate them to clothe the OWS crowd.....
kinda like msnbc's lean forward.
Please correct me if I am wrong, I think the unidentified vessel is a South Korean DDH.
Chungmugong Yi Sun-shin class destroyer.
This has provided some entertainment this afternoon.
"Global Force for Good" is too reminiscent of fascist slogans justifying the use of force to subdue unwilling civilians.
In an historical context alone, it was a very naive choice regardless of its opposite intent.
Good riddance to foolish slogans. Another problem is still evident, however.
Note the bottom left of latest poster references "Keeping Sea Lanes Safe". How does that square with allowing piratical transgressions before our CinC AUTHORIZES navy COs to engage the bad guys? Our admirals and generals our completely cowed by JAGS. We have become a legal paper tiger! Just saying...
I'd have preferred "Navy: Whipping Ass on the Seven Seas since 1775", but I'll take what I can get.
The post-DADT crowd may think the Navy is just an S&M cruise....
Unless you make a mistake when you are below the rank of admiral, don't belong to one of the protected classes or have the political clout to defend yourself.
Excuse me, when was the last time a JAG's signature appreared on a line officer's adverse FITREP? The last time a JAG's signature appeared on a line offier's punitive letter? The last time a JAG voted in the tank on a line officer's promotion board? Sure, JAGs provide opinions and recommendations but the line admirals and generals make the decisions. And thank God they do!
The CO's make decisions when authorized. For instance, on August 12, 2009, SEAL snipers on the afterdeck of the U.S.S. Bainbridge shot and killed 3 pirates, after CinC had given Bainbridge CO authority to call the shot. Until that time and the CO's situation reports: no authority had been given according to published reports of the incident.
Yes, the libs do love to parade around in military gear. Whether they deserve it or not.
Nice find. I had spent some time on Hazegray and Wikipedia to eliminate most Euro vessels and Japanese Navy. I knew it wasn't PLA/ ROC and pretty sure it wasn't middle east. SK was my next check but had work to do (working on vacation - take THAT Occupy Wall Street).
Now perhaps someone should ask the SKs if they are recieving a dime for an advertising prop.
Navy public affairs / marketing: small fail
Is this the U.S Navy or the Dutch Navy?
Douglas, the only Sailors I know personally are a SEAL and a Vietnam Vet Naval aviator. I think they'd both like your slogan. :)
It would be better if they made GOOD decisions more often.
Used to be, that an OOD(F), or even an OOD(I), had to study and instantly recognize the silhouettes of surface warships from all major countries. And merchants, too.
It was even more challenging to be able to correcctly ID a small frigate or destroyer by the upper half of the silhouette, as if viewing it thru binoculars when it was at a range of 7 to 10 or 12 miles, where the hull is down below the horizon and only antennas/mast arrangements are revealed. Any Fleet qualified or even an Independent OOD should have been able to instantly detect that one of those 4 escort ships surrounding that carrier was of a foreign design. Gee, they are not even partially over the horizon, so their entire silhouette is fully in view. Don't wardrooms have ship recognition cards, books, etc. readily available to all their officers ? Even in minimal light and visibility, at ranges where only the 03 levels and up can be observed thru standard Pilot House issue binoculars, a qualified OOD should be almost as accurate at ship recognition as a first class signalman. Future conflicts at sea cannot count on accurate AIS, CEC, JTIDS Link-16, etc. to do all the identification for our OOD's.
Typical of a Submarine guy(the CNO) did not even know if the ships were US or not.
Ron Swanson for President!
Guess the LCS had to outchop for fuel or a module; missed the photo op.
CNO Greenert Kicking Ass update:
10/14/11: recognizing that our maritime strategy is unexecutable in the current fiscal environment, CNO tasks the entire OPNAV staff to forward him recommendations for "game changing" programs, cancellations, modifications, etc that are executable in the fiscal environment. Basically, what have you been sitting on for the past few years as you watched the Navy crumble? Everything from the O-6 and below level was evaluated at the 2 star level and then forwarded up the chain of command. To say that it was motivating is the understatement of the year. The task came out with a one hour turn around. THAT IS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. Hard pressed, let's get it done, quick turn, forward leaning leadership!
A CNO who is thinking strategy, thinking realistically, and looking to make the best of a shitty situation. Remember when I said he loves the book Moneyball? Anyone done their homework yet and actually read the book? You will recognize what is going on right now. Good things.
I'm getting excited.
