Midrats - Episode 33: The Other Side of Counter Insurgency and the fading of DADT

Thank you for your patience loyal readers. In spite of our technical problems earlier - we have back two guests you have been looking forward to hearing from.

After a decade of conflict - is the impact and influence of Counter Insurgency (COIN) doctrine creating an imbalance in how we equip and train our armed forces?

As we invest our intellectual efforts in the Middle East and Central Asia - how has the situation in the East and Northeast Asia changed?

Join my co-host EagleOne from EagleSpeak and me this Sunday, August 22th at 5pm EST, as we bring on two guests to discuss.

For the first half of the hour will be Douglas A. Macgregor Col. USA, (Ret), the author of USNI Press's Warrior's Rage: The Great Tank Battle of 73 Easting, and Transformation Under Fire: Revolutionizing How America Fights.

A little pre-view of Col. McGregor.

For the second half of the hour, we are going to update a subject we last covered back in Episode 7 in February. As our guest we will have retired Navy Reserve Commander Zoe Dunning, Board Co-Chair of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network on to discuss the lobbying efforts on behalf of repeal of "Don't Ask Don't Tell" and a status report on where the debate stands.

Join us live if you can and pile in with the usual suspects in the chat room during the show where you can offer your own questions and observations to our guests. If you miss the show or want to catch up on the shows you missed - you can always reach the archives at blogtalkradio - or set yourself to get the podcast on iTunes.

Thread hijack!  The Old Gray Badger turns 49 today!  Everybody consume prodigious quantities of chocolate, ice cream, and cold beverage of choice!  For successfully making it this far, I rewarded myself with a SIG 522 with a Burriss red dot sight, and MagPul back up sights. YAY, ME!  Only 365 more days and I turn 50! HUZZAH!

We now return to the comments intended for this thread

Happy Birthday, you old Badger ;)

Happy Birthday, old guy!

Yes, but does turning 49 make you either gay or transformational?  Does it lend to your "diversity"?

If not, it is merely a cake and a handgun.  Which, come to think of it, makes for a pretty damned good birthday!

For a nice young man you are doing well. Mind your P's and Q's and in a year you will only have a couple of decades to wait before you enter the prime of life.

Happy B-day Badge.

We like the CDR's like - I celebrated the 20th anniversary of my 29th birthday earlier this week.  Didn't buy a SIG, however.  I need to fix that.

I wouldn't bet that DADT is fading. Under assault, yes. But fading? It's either here or not.

They need to bring back the question. Wouldn't even take a change of law, just start. CM the guys that cme "out of teh closet" for fraudulent emlistment and widely publicize teh conviction amd dishomorable discharge.

Dong away with DADT would be deadly to the services if it isn't replaced by the question.

Youngster.  I turned 49 two weeks ago.  This younger generation (sigh).....

Byron said...

CV60, I was born BEFORE the keel of your bird farm was laid...by 4 or 5 years...

Not to mention, but CV-60 is really CV-59, and vice versa ;)

B.S. says the actual 29 year old.

Obviously there is a good story behind that!  Do tell, O sage one.

Nah, the Sara may have the same layout, except of course some of the rebuilt compartments due to the fire, but the FID was always the better ship :)

Byron said...

Fids keel was laid before Sara...but Sara's work progressed much quicker for various reasons. Because the Fid was to be first of class, it was decided to simply switch the name on the contracts and voila! Sara became Fid, and first to be launched, and Fid became Sara, second to launch. Down inside a void at the centerline there is a plate on the Sara that says, "USS Forrestal". ISYN.

NSES! (No Screamin' Eagle Sh*t!)

It is THAT kinda stuff that makes me read every comment here.  Thanks, Byron!

QM, I'll take that bet - I give DA/DT 6 months. Which, of course, is 17 years and 6 months overdue, but Pres Clinton couldn't get it done. Different times now...

we need longer episodes... 2 hours please? because chat is really going on when we need to end...

Happy Birthday!  You know I have your back in all things chocolate.  However, I celebrated 49 on the vernal equinox.....so the word "old" must be stricken from this thread.

Why do you care if someone is gay or not?

Someone should tell Eagle One that he doesn't need the nervous slightly condescending laugh when talking to a lesbian.  I did find it funny that you brought up the outlandish imagery of what people imagine people doing in uniform as if it's others, yet post outlandish imagery on your blog to spurr the conversation.  I guess stirring the pot is good, but no need to feign innocence.  "URR - over to you."
