UPDATE: Hey, I'll take the twofer!
State Sen. Scott Brown won a stunning victory over Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley Tuesday night, handing Republicans a 41st seat in the United States Senate and endangering health care reform by bringing an end to the Democrats’ 60-seat majority.

The Associated Press called the race for Brown as the Republican held a 53 percent to 46 percent edge over Coakley with more than 70 percent of precincts reporting. Coakley conceded defeat ...
Congrats Maggie.

Between that and the
return of the right in Chile last week - all in all a good month for democracy.

Stewart is the master of mockery... nice to have him working over the other side for a change.

That was pretty good. His sarcasm is fan freaking tastic!

Larry Bird is a Sesame Street character. Great line. But he's right. MA State House changed the appointment law anticipating Kerry winning, with Romney as Governor. Now they have Cadillac Deval, but are forced into a special election it looks like they might lose.

Tell me that ain't karma.

I wouldn't say Stewart works any particular side of a story. Thats what is so great about The Daily Show to begin with. The reason why he's been pinned as a conservative bashing, liberal comedo-journalist is because they thrive on pointing out absurdity in politics... which tends to rear its head most often in the camp of the Party in control (Which was Bush for the entirety of Stewart's tenure as the host; Kilbourn had Clinton, but his show also sucked minus "5 Questions"). Enough of that. Probably some of the best political commentary from the Daily Show recently. Absolutely classic. I especially liked the bit about how the Health Care Reform Bill will die without the supermajority in the Senate.

Brown wins! Our founding Fathers are proud and their wisdom shines brightly tonight.

Freaking awesome that Brown wins. "Heck of a job Browny!"

I never expected but sincerely hoped for this outcome.

Congratulations Massachusetts! Keep it up and the term "Masshole" will be eliminated from my working vocabulary. ;) [And yes, I lived across the border in New Hampshire for twenty-five years.]

So much for global warming. I think Hell just froze over.

Schwing!I felt pretty good about non-intelligenista suburbia (Cambridge bedroom communities) going for Brown but the clinch was (obviously) the urban areas.

Also good to hear Curt Schilling doing the robodialing.

Coupe Deval is next...

I'm sorry Minnesota had to put this race out to be so necessary. With Al Franken, in my humble opinion cheating, this was so necessary to squeeze the life out of the Obama agenda.

The Democrats laid their bed with the fillabuster when they used it (threatened) against judicial nominees, something not done before.

I suspect that's why this 41st seat is so necessary. Now that the gloves are off and Dem's used it w/by changing how its used, I'm glad Republicans have the balls to stick it to them.

My worry? Those two Maine senators. I suspect the Republican leadership will have to buy them off to stay in the fold, rather than simply do the right thing because this health care bill was never about reform. It was about control. And that's scary as h..............!

This is actually a good thing for Democrats. Democrats [hopefully] learned an important lesson tonight that its best not to underestimate your opponent-no matter how right your position may be. It doesn’t matter- if you cannot communicate it clearly.

However, Tip O’ Neill’s advice is probably still pertinent-all politics is local. Not knowing a damn thing about the Red Sox is probably not the best thing you want to have happen. Or the public image you want to convey. If you want to win. This is the equivalent of Tebow getting his ass handed to him by Alabama-because he just expected to waltz out on to the field and have the Tide roll over.

Doesn’t mean I like Alabama any better though

If there is a silver lining-it is that Brown voters will get screwed over by insurance companies the same as everyone else.

But if there's one thing the nihilist right understands it is the power of a good lie. And if you lose your health insurance in the next few years, or you were hoping to be able to get some soon, or if you just lost your job and thereby insurance, or if your premiums continue to sky-rocket and your wages continue to languish because of health care costs, you know who to blame.

It's a nice win. However, I don't expect the Obama administration to change course (although they will probably change tactics). They are composed of true believers, determined to remake society. They believe that 1) they know better than the unwashed masses and 2) they have a decreasing window of opportunity to accomplish their goals. IMHO, they may make some minor course corrections, but they are determined to accomplish their objective of remaking American society in their socialist image. The only question is how they will do it.

I think you are quoting the wrong revolution. If you want to see where tea baggery eventually leads, learn some French. liberte, eglaitaire, fraternite. it will get the same results too.

The question is, which Republican is Robespierre?

Love this tidbit from teh www.politico.com website...

Telling the crowd he received a phone call from President Obama, Brown alluded to his campaign ads featuring his pickup truck, which the president mocked in a campaign stop Sunday.

“When I spoke to the president, the first thing I said was, would you like me to drive the truck down to Washington so you can see it?” Brown said.

Republican said...

Oh, it's 'tea baggery' all right.

And while you're down there, how about you give my boys a good once-over?

AW1 Tim said...

The only thing missing last night at Brown's rally was a fife & drum corps playing "The World Turned Upside Down". That was the tune played when the British marched out of their fortifications at Yorktown to surrender. I think it appropo here.

My caustion in all of this is not to forget the snakes that we are dealing with in Congress. Mostly left, but a few right too. It's a nest of vipers that needs to be flushed out before the nation gets a severe bite.

And Scott Brown's victory is just one of many that we will need to win back our freedoms from the oppressors of the left. Think of this one a Trenton. We caught the Hessians sleeping and partying, all in a festive mood. It's a good, solid win, but thetre are more battles ahead and we'll need every Patriot to throw off the yoke of serfdom that the self=appointed liberal masters would fasten to us, and to our children.

BostonMaggie said...

Tim, I am stealing that for my blog, although I think it's more like the British evacuating Dorchester Heights, we have a long way to go before Yorktown.

BostonMaggie said...

Yes, when Obama came to Boston on Sunday he pulled another "Cambridge Police acted stupidly" gaffe. He stated that he didn't know Scott Brown and he might be a nice guy and he didn't know anything about his politics.........but Scott Brown will take you in the wrong direction.

Hello???

How can he know that without knowing anything about Scott? How can you say that you don't know anything about a person or their stand on issues....but then pass judgement anyway?

Also, Scott Brown's truck was made by United Auto Workers.....isn't that who we keep going to and saving. We want them to build and sell trucks. Well, Scott bought one - maybe Obama should say thank you.

I am a fan of Tip's. And JFK. And Joe Moakley. Not a one of them would have had any use for Martha Coakley.

Skippy - saying "tea baggery" out here is fine. I can be as salty as any of the boys out here in good fun. But I am quite disgusted with those in the public eye and in the MSM who use this word. It's a sexual slur that is not ok to use in denigrating someone's political opinion. I hope it bites Chuck Schumer in the ass when he is up for re-election.

How? How! How is it ok for for NPR, MSNBC to use this word in describing a political movement. Whether they like it or not, those are their fellow Americans exercising their 1st amendment rights.

When they had the May Day, La Raza march can you even for one second imagine someone on the Republican or conservative side going on the air or sending an email describing it as the "March of the Wetbacks"?

How about the Million Man March? What if some Republican Senator said they wouldbe distracted when they passed the Popeye's chicken?

When the Planned Parenthood/NARAL rallies - "I bet I could nail some of the ass....."

No, it would be horrific.

What happended to "“I may disagree with what you have to say but I shall defend, to the death, your right to say it"?????

Instead, it's "I disagree with you so I will shout you down and villify you and heap scorn and derision on you. When that fails I will use vile sexual slogans."

AW1-Not to pick nits, but I'd go with Saratoga as an analogy. It ain't over by a long shot, but it might be considered to be "the end of the beginning." The fact is that the people who back Obama have a vision and drive that approaches religous faith in the justness of their cause. They will continue to push, using any means, both fair and foul until they are utterly defeated. Note that the lies, bribes, misrepresentations, not reading the bill, shutting the Republicans out of any negotiations didn't bother them. Nor did the tea parties, town halls, and correspondence from voters. In fact, their initial reaction was to demean their constituents and press forward. The people behind the health care and other key aspects of the democratic platform stop only when they are forced to stop. Then, like water, they try to flow around the obstacle. They remain wedded to their objective-they will simply adopt a new strategy.

Mags, I wouldn't be too upset. The "Tea Baggery" statement is attributed the broken toys of our society... they will be forgotten about...

Skippy-san said...

I have a better answer for you over at my blog-sadly I did not write it: my Canadian counterpart did. ( Unlike the inhalers of the aromas of tea bags ( How's that?) I don't plagarize.)

The Tea Parties are make for adorable television, and may yet give people like Sarah Palin their sixteenth minute of fame, but in the long run, they'll amount to little else. Don't get me wrong, I understand that hating the president is fun! I'm in my seventeenth year of doing it myself. Rallies, as the hippies of a bygone era taught us, are a neat way of meeting like-minded people and possibly getting laid, although the idea of "rugged individualists" feeling the need to form giant groups amuses me to no end.

But if painting Hitler mustaches and swastikas on stuff was going solve America's intractable problems, I'm pretty sure that someone would have figured that out already. Just sayin'."

MR T's Haircut said...

Skippy,

You are wrong and you grossly mischaracterize the tea party folks and when doing so show your own misunderstanding.

When I went last April, there were no TV camera's or press coverage. This was not about the press not about the congress and quite frankly not about the people at the Tea Party. It was and has been about a return to our constitutional principles and to try to preserve some of our nation for our children.

It is realy very simple, do you support a changing conventional wisdom and using popularity to govern, or do you suport a principled true to the constitution form of governance. I choose the latter.

The Tea Party I attended had people of all races and mostly middle age to older folks. Hardly the rabble rousers that MSNBC and MR Maddow and MS Olbermann have been crying about.. but then again, I have to ask why is the left so afraid of normal mainstream Americans.....

MR T's Haircut said...

oh yea, and lets not forget that at first they only projected this as a local on off, and that only a couple of hundred or maybea thousand showed up... wrong, this is a movement and it's undercurrent was felt in Massachusettes adn will continue in the November time frame.

(Remember August town halls? )

Skippy,

I wouldnt worry too much about Safety Committees being formed from the right side of the aisle... now the lefties.... I can see that happening... hell they already have Czar's....

cdrsalamander said...

So, you liked the second video then?

Anthony Mirvish said...

Skippy,
Are you saying that everyone in the Tea Party movement is a hateful, irrational opportunist and that anyone who is in favor of small government nuts? That the latter is an inherently wrong political position? That when people disagree they don't have a right to peaceably assemble and petition for redress? (Check out the difference in behavior between the anti-globalist, pro-environment types at the typical G7 summit as but one example of the alternative on the left).

I suspect the Founders would have be against the Obama (and for that matter the entire progressive) agenda. Their style, though, would probably better satisfy critics of their views.
