The biggest loser in this debacle, however, is Vic Rawls (sic), Greene’s primary opponent. About as far North as by bloodline strayed was to Kentucky in the 1830s, and most of my blood comes from one of the longest family lines in Mississippi - pre-statehood Mississippi .... and they came west from South Carolina. Blacks spell Greene with an "e" on the end, and the average voter in a South Carolina Democratic primary is a black woman. Also, Greene's name appeared above Rawl's on the ballot and the name Rawl sounds like white Charleston aristocracy. Most voters didn't know who Greene or Rawl was and Rawl didn't campaign enough to earn high name recognition even though he certainly campaigned very hard throughout the state. A massively uninformed electorate chose the name Greene over Rawl and it's just that simple...Sectarian politics at its worst. The ability to do a job isn't what is important - it is the color of your skin. A Representative Republic does not function well when voters have a sectarian mindset. Anyway, South Carolina is about 30% black. Democrats and Republicans are roughly evenly split % wise Very few blacks in South Carolina are Republicans. With a wide margin of error - you can safely say that in the Democrat primary, at least 51% of the Democrat voters were black.

Race based voting; sometimes, it gets your results like this. If you don't like it - then turn away from sectarianism. Oppose it in every form you find. Go for a color-blind culture of unity, not division. Oppose sectarianism at home, work, and in your circle of friends. Don't let others promote sectarianism - call them out - even if they are your friend, family member, or your Chief of Naval Operations.
