Saturday Music Stop

Since I left the world of Agnosticism tinged with Deism in early 2002, there was one hymn that quickly became my favorite.

I don't think it has ever been done better than this version by Vince Gill and Carrie Underwood.

It literally gave me chills.

Sorry, CDR -- nothing can be better than the Elvis Presley and the Jordanairres version.

Sorry CDR, I don't get you entirely.

You mean you've become more religious or what?

Aubrey said...

Mine is Amazing Grace - sung a capella or played solo on a bagpipe it gets me every time.

I love traditional hymns, and the power they have.

That being said, Third Day's live version of Angus Dei also really gets to me

The traditional, emotion invoking hymns are so powerful. Carrie & Vince are fantastic, and saw his concert years back - terrific as well.

OMC,
A little over 9 years ago I became an evangelical. I don't blog much about it, as in the Southern Gentleman's tradition I believe that religion is a private manner, and only the insecure, illbred, or poorly mannered wave their beliefs in a heavy manner or bother others about their sins until they finish working on their own. Religious differences are best settled on the softball field. Sure, we know the Methodists are cheating and have some butchy Unitarians on their team - but not worth the bother for brothers in Christ. We don't have the depth of bench as the Mormon and Papist teams O:-) , but we manage as we know our pot-luck table is heavier.

So, there. That is about all the witness you'll get out of me here.

Huh. And here I was thinking you were a lifelong naughty Baptist.

I love that hymn too. When she started off I was afraid that she was going to personalize it and wreck it, but she finished beautifully.

Ah, but we Papists have bars at our parties. ;)

as a somewhat "wayward sheep" papist I must admit nothing beats thundering "Te deum laudamus" on a morning Easter sunday mass... the same song was usual hymn of gratitude after a battle won, especially against Turks...

cant stop but post it now, very similar to the mass I've partaken this year, and typical of Polish Easter :

Whooda thunk... you would hear this performed in a casino in Las Vegas??? Almost as unbelievable as learning and singing the hymn in a public elementary school (although it was mid-'60s western NC).

Thanks Sal. Had to listen to it again this morning. Seemed like a good way to start my Sunday.

There's a bible verse, wish I could remember where, that states to the effect God's word will go out, regardless of motive, etc. Something like, His word will go out, and will not come back void.

As a Christian, I grieve when it Christianity is mis-represented, as it has been - inside and outside the church. In this case - in this song - you see Christianity exactly as it is, and wow, who wouldn't want to be join up when you hear this song. You hear truth in these words, you know it in your heart. Indeed - how great thou art!

Wharf Rat said...

Third Day has shown up at Sonshine in Willmar, MN a number of times - outstanding.

Had the chance to visit Vatican City late in 2006, and even though I too am an Evangelical Christian, the traditions I saw in that city were inspiring. I was a big fan of the previous Pope, as many were, and I love that the Catholic church stands true to values when popular culture tries to tear them down. Heck, the evangelical church doesn't stand against abortion as strongly as the Catholics do. Hat tip to the Catholics on that one.

Salty here is the only Anglican in a long line of Catholics dating back to before the Crusades, which we so un politically correctedly fought in. So bizarre that I am an Anglican when I think of it, but, alas, such is geo-politics.

I guarantee that CINC HEAVEN smiled when He heard that.

Salty, look at it this way: All the pagentry of the Catholic Church with only half the guilt.

great for a church. keep it out of my school, please.

Kristen said...

Aubrey, I'm not familiar with it. I'll have to check it out.

Kristen said...

Ewok, thank you. That warmed my Catholic heart.

I pray that the Holy Spirit brings all of His wayward and lapsed sons and daughters, and in particular Ewok and Byron, back home to His Church again.

Kristen said...

Hey Salty, some of your Anglican brethren are headed our way. The door is wide open and plenty of room inside! :)

Kristen said...

Wharf Rat, I think that all believers need to work together to change the culture. I'm very happy to have Evangelicals with us in the pro-life movement, and I think real progress is being made there!

Wharf Rat said...

Ah, the chance to take a shot was just too great a temptation here.

I'll raise you that comment Mr. Guest, and also state, keep Indian Rain dances out too. See, people like me, and I'll speak for myself here, don't see a public school system neutral to Christianity, but hostile in particular to Christianity. Secular liberalism is a religion that bows at the altar of 'diversity'.

Full stop - it's just too nice a day to take the shot back that I really wanted to take. Maybe what I wrote was enough anyway.

Byron said...

That little song, scared you, eh "guest"? Sucks to be you...

sid said...

I'll raise you that comment Mr. Guest

Atheism too then guest...

Gaia.

The whole smorgasboard, if thats how you want it.

But I'm sure you feel the only offensive "belief system" which requires exclusion is Christianity...

Aubrey said...

As CS Lewis once wrote, when all is said and done it all comes to down to a man on a cross.

We're all just crew on this boat, my department and head and yours might have arguments, but we all get our fitreps from CINCHEAVEN (thanks for that one Salty, I love it)

He who sings prays twice. The God who created the human heart and human ear and the song of the birds deserves to have His gift returned to Him. I think the Catholic version of Phib's How Great Thou Art is here... sometimes the melody conveys where words fail... the seeking of the soul for peace, unity and its ultimate rest.

Byron said...

"and in particular Ewok and Byron, back home to His Church again."

Katy, the Church is in my heart...where it should be ;)

Byron said...

Katy is back up! Sad to say, three people in her town were victims of the Tornados...

it is rarely when I can hit like with so much joy!

guest said...

oh, no. no special exclusion for Christianity; keep 'em all out.

believe what you want, take from your beliefs what you need and give back as you see fit, be you Muslim, Morman, Catholic, Wiccan, Buddhist or FSM. and teach your children. but so as not to show preference for any one set of beliefs, let's just put all of them away during school hours.

And actually, Byron - I found it amazing....
