From 1942, it is the story of the Supermarine Spitfire with David Niven. This is the full 1 hr and 56 minute movie. Thanks to the hint form a guest last week.

wha? No cost over-runs? No fights on second engine source? No flap over budgetary numbers? No worrries about what allies if any will buy? No congressional inquiries/ How da hell do you expect to win a war without all of this hangy-on stuff?

Anyone know what squadron "SD" corresponds with?

'SD' was used by 501 (County of Gloucester) Sqn. Formed in Bristol (my grandfather was an ARP warden in Filton) they then fought in France and relocated to the south-east for the Battle of Britain, where they operated Hawker Hurricanes. Converted to Spitfires in '41 the year before this film was made ('First of the Few' is a wartime production)

Can't speak for the Brits, but Congressional oversight was expressed to some degree during WW 2, see Truman Committee, some things don't change...
