If you've ever wanted to visit a World War II gunboat, you'll have your chance this weekend.Once in a lifetime chance - worth a double mention for FbF. We should encourage museums like this. They should have a great visit weekend. Take pictures and send them in.
A former USS LCS (L) (3) 102, also known as a "Mighty Midget," will be open to visitors from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday along the Mare Island Strait.
The boat is the last of 130 LCSs that remains intact. It can be found at the end of Fourth Street on Mare Island.
The little ships had more firepower per ton than any ships ever built for the U.S. Navy. Their role was to provide support for large battleships in the Pacific as they prepared to fire on other ships.
They also fought fires on damaged ships, rescued survivors from the waters, provided medical assistance to the wounded, towed ships, helped ships hit by Kamikaze planes, among other activities.
Before arriving in Vallejo last year, the LCS was a Royal Thai Navy vessel for more than 40 years, the H.T.M.S. Nakha.
The Mare Island Historic Park Foundation plans to accept the ship and turn it into a museum and memorial to those who fought on Pacific fronts during World War II.
The ship can be found by crossing the Mare Island Causeway, turning left on Nimitz Avenue, and then turning left on Fourth Street.
Take a kid.
