DEFENSE ADVANCED RESEARCH PROJECTS AGENCY

Boston Dynamics, Inc., Waltham, Mass., is being awarded a $10,882,438 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract. The contractor will develop and build a set of identical humanoid robot systems for use by performers in both phases of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Robotics Challenge Program. This effort will develop robotic platforms consisting of two legs, a torso, on board computing, two arms with hands, and a sensor head. The robots to be delivered to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency will be distributed to the top software development teams based on the results of the Virtual Disaster Challenge of the Robotics Challenge program. The contractor will also provide in-the-field support and as-required maintenance to the delivered systems. Work will be performed in Waltham, Mass. Work is expected to be completed by Aug. 9, 2014. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is the contracting activity (HR0011-12-C-0106).

I have always said that the future of Naval Aviation is 60's and F-18's until they are replaced by UAV's. Then Skynet will become self-aware and we will all be in trouble. I meant the Skynet part jokingly, but maybe not anymore.

Humanoid robotics are over-rated for military use outside limb replacement and rehab (for now). Really, specialized stuff is better, since the head, torso, 2 legs combo isn't the most efficient for many tasks. The humanoid model is really just efficient for keeping people from being unnerved. It'll be awhile till we have robocop or c3po.
