The post-post-racial President

If there is no other reason that President Obama should not be re-elected in 2012 - we have one now that Left & Right should unite in with disgust and agreement.

President Obama was elected in a large part because the American public had progressed to a point where they wanted to show that they had left a nasty part of their past behind - racism.

The idea that a man whose father was a black Kenyan and self-identified as black meant something. After all, how could someone call your nation racist if it just elected to the highest office a man
most people identify as "black." They were willing to roll the dice.

Part of that bargain was that President Obama was supposed to help up move further along. Solidify our growing race-neutral nation. Convince a few more percentages of people that we are what the rest of the word sees us as - Americans.

Well - in a preview of what will be an exceptionally nasty 2012 campaign - President Obama proves that he was listening all those years to
Jeremiah Alvesta Wright. The few racialist tells in his books and his statements were grounded in that mindset.

He is not a uniter - he is a pimp for political sectarianism.

First,
In a radio interview that aired on Univision on Monday, Mr. Obama sought to assure Hispanics that he would push an immigration overhaul after the midterm elections, despite fierce Republican opposition.

“If Latinos sit out the election instead of saying, ‘We’re gonna punish our enemies and we’re gonna reward our friends who stand with us on issues that are important to us,’ if they don’t see that kind of upsurge in voting in this election, then I think it’s gonna be harder and that’s why I think it’s so important that people focus on voting on November 2.”
... and then something his friends at the Justice Department must enjoy.
"We don't mind the Republicans joining us. They can come for the ride, but they gotta sit in back."
Would that be the back of the bus Mr. President?

You may have thought you were sending an inside joke - but really, that is just about a blunt and mindless as you can get. You are the President of the United States - not some shmo running for State Representative from some gerrymandered district.

Shame on you; I hoped you would be better than that. America deserves better in its Chief Executive.

Shame! Shame! Instead of unifying a nation, instead he decides to publicly divide us further. This is all about power and "getting even". Its your turn to pay, whitey and we're calling the tune. This man is not fit to be President.

Byron, agreed.  POTUS's agenda is all about "getting even."  HE is not interested in the environment, in the economy, creating jobs, creating wealth.  He is interested in punishing those whom he feels have had it better than him.  The funny part:  he went to ivy league schools, never held a real job, and has made a life for himself and his family by agitating folks and building a cult of personality.  When it comes to leadership, management, conflict resolution, and the advancement of Amerca and the American Way, he has been an empty suit.

And the fact that he really doesn't care about other liberal issues makes me laugh.  We all knew he doesn't care about national security, values, personal freedom, individual responsibility or the Constitution.  The fact that he only care about getting even--that will sink him.

I don't want to create a negative back and forth here, but POTUS doesn't surprise me at all.

I knew as a candidate that he was the most left wing candidate ever for the Presidency.  I knew, like many of you knew, that hanging out at Wrights church for 20 years was a bad thing.  Being associated with the un-repentant terrorist, also a bad thing.  I have multiple relatives who voted for the guy based on 'change'.  (As an aside - I told those family members that they should've been really happy with the Bush administration, because if you folks (my relatives) were truly moderate, the Bush administration did everything you needed - which was grow the size and scope of government domestically).

Now it surprises me when people are surprised about Obama.  We handed the US government over to one political party - and they cashed in.   I knew they would over-reach.  Liberals can't help themselves.  Also, Obama has been a freak show since he was a senator, and has made millions of his own, while being angry at the system that allowed him to make millions.  That's a freak show.

The biggest thing that worries me - and they (liberals) have to have done this succesfully - is made our money situation so critical, and people so dependent on their handouts, that the only place to cut is the United States Military.  The fact that only 50% of the population pays Federal income taxes has to be by design.  Even if it's only a few bucks, everyone should pay.  (I've digressed a bit)

Don't forget, most all of that handed to him by those who did well in a capitalistic system.  Private high school?  Yep...raised by po' people alright.

Add to his lack of his experience, his arrogance, but also his extraordinary ungratefulness.  Without "The Man (Men)" who came before him, and greased the paths for a know nothing, did nothing guy to get to the highest seat of power in history, and not even acknowledge he would NEVER had had this opportunity.  He'd still be knocking on doors in Chicago, trying to get the vote out for volunteer wages, with Michelle ridding his a$$ for not being the man of the house and bringing home a real paycheck.

And yet there are millions who continue to drink his cool-aid, eating up every word, loving his every action.  They are the same who want those idiots Pelosi to continue their dictatorships in congress. They are attacking free speach any front that opposes them, and site it as the reason they can say anything. Now, I am getting harassed by them (4 phone calls yesterday) on voting for their sorry candidate here in FL. The Left exisits to increase the scope and reach of government further and further into the everyday lives of the People.  The tactic is to divide and conquer group-by-group.  A handout here and a handout there; all the while with OPM (Other People's Money).  I knew he was going to be a train wreck - I just had no idea that it would be so fast.  He is an empty suit, an ideologue, a racist, a subversive, and a fellow traveler of all those who came before him.

Yeah, in twenty years of attending Wright's Black Seperatist church he never heard any of the invectives.  Bill Ayers, he didn't know him.  The list goes on and on.  The president is a serial liar and a race baiter.  The rhetoric he has bee using over the last few weeks of the election season would land an independent or a republican in political ht water.  His "sit in the back" comment would bring calls for resignation if anybody else had uttered it. This is not the America I was raised in; this is the America prior to it in reverse.  Racism is wrong.  Discrimination is wrong.  It doesn't matter what color your skin happens to be - wrong is wrong.  Remember, Michelle said he would change America...she didn't say for the better.

It's a chess game for power.  Certainly, not about the health and welfare of the people.

It worked for Clinton. He let the Republicans be Republicans and the folks got to see what they really cared about. ( Which is not the average working person in America, but the exceedingly rich corporations that employ them and discard them at will).

Which kind of gets to what Obama was saying. It was not a racial comment at all-he is simply saying that unless you are committed dealing with the issues of the increasing number of folks who are being left behind as more and more wealth finds its way into fewer and fewer hands. The issue of income stagnation or degradation ( people hate it when you call it by its proper name, income inequality) is real and it is creating a long term problem for the country, as well as an increasing number of people not receiving the benefits of their labors.

And the loons in the Tea Party are not about getting even? That's at the center of all of their rhetoric. It certainly is not about proposing serious policy solutions and fixing things that are broken.

There can be no solutions to anything in this country as long as people blatantly assume that anyone who does not agree with the Teabag prescription (and I don't for some very sound reasons)  does so from a position of honest belief and not some underhanded criminal intent.  That tendency started long before Obama was blip on the radar screen-he simply took the Republican playbook and used it. And now after a ten year lost decade thanks to both political parties we will simply go into a cycle of action / reaction.

Americans get the government they deserve. Because over half of them refuse to vote-and when they do endorse candidates it is caricatures instead of people of substance. Pelosi and Reid are bad yes, but deep down they are no different than their counterparts on the other side of the aisle. You have Obama in the white house in the first place because John McCain felt compelled to kow tow to a mob is own party. How is that any different from the actions you now decry on the other side? They are not.

    Skippy-san:

How to you propose to achieve income equality? One salary for all, 2000 man/hrs a year for all?

A red-headed freckle faced ex-child actress makes more on one bad movie by kissing a former beauty contest winner than the crew of a frigate together for year, or a Marine Battalion makes for a deployed year including death benefits and insurance for the widows, but makes less than a crooked ponzi scheme con artist bilking the producer of 5 good movies in the same year.  An infectious disease ICU nurse in Detroit pulls 40 bucks an hour on the back shift, about the same as some merchant ship's Captains, but the nurse has an associates degree and three years experience. Chopping lettuce in California for an illegal border jumping migrant worker might make 5 bucks an hour.  An auto parts store between store pickup driver makes half what a legal courier makes in the same town with a easier variety of the same job.  A new hire UAW line worker now pulls 14 bucks an hour, half what the same job paid 5 years ago. An an experienced textile mill loom mechanic can't get a job at all, but the ex PE teacher and coach who went to night school and got an Ed D., who is the local Supt of Schools is pulling down a quarter mil a year?

Just how are you going to solve that?

Greed, for lack of a better word, is destructive. The lust for power is toxic. Fix that.

Good sense, fiscal sanity, evolutionary change through incremental improvement and care for the common good. the community, and the public health are what is missing.  Duty, honor, country, representative government, equality before the law, and solving problems by intelligent compromise at the lowest possible level, for the good of the next generation are what are missing.  Get those on order Pri 01 expedite for us, will you?

Skippy - thanks for posting here often.  I like being challenged to defend my beliefs.  Keeps me sharp.

I'm going to challenge you.  Where is the incentive to make more and more money?  The cunard that wealth is in fewer and fewer hands is clearly by design, if it's true.  But not the way you think it.  Those under $50k pay next to no income tax.  Those that make above, then clearly pay 100% of it.

So - if there is an wage gap, I charge that its because there is no incentive to move above $50k because you're a net gainor of government programs without paying for them, and if you achieve more, then you get punished for your achievement.

If there is an growing income gap, tell those who are down there to get going and make it up.  But you have to STOP punishing people for success.  I don't give a rats aaa$$$ if people make more money than me.  I want to make that kind of money.  Nor do I think I have to pay for people who make less than me and are less productive.  Call me an evil white republican, but billions are spent every year on public and private charity and explain to me why the poverty rate has gotten worse, not better.

The only way to grow all wages is to incent people to do better.  The current system set up by your party DOES NOT DO THIS.  It punishes success.  When you start to reward success, the wage gap, if there is one, will come closer together.

And what you dont' know about me - I was a welfare kid in the 60's.  In 1970 I was put into a foster home (and stayed).  Welfare and public housing SUCK.  The only way to get out of poverty is to work yourself out of it.  Handouts DO NOT WORK.

The loons in the Tea Party huh? So you call people who take to the streets to demand good governance and less spending 'loons'???

You got to be kidding me. I'm a Belgian, a European, and I will tell you EXACTLY what the typical euro reaction is to excess government spending. People shrug and cocoon. They say 'apres nous le deluge' (after us the flood), and the more sensible ones try to prepare themselves for the downfall.

The Tea Party activism, however, is something that I, personally, regard as a UNIQUE, unheard of sociological phenomenon. For me as a European to see people demanding loud and clear from their government to manage the state's financial and other resources like a good husband and father would do, that's something... INCREDIBLE.

There's a mass of people out there in these Tea Party groups, people who in times of crises would actually be better off financially if they spent the hours they now spend on their activism to some second job, and yet there they are, with their placards and their demos. I think it's actually wonderful, it's something that is totally IMPOSSIBLE in Europe. In Europe, Frenchmen burn cars and public infrastructure because the government wants to raise retirement age from 60 to 62.

But these Tea Partiers, basically, in a sense, they exhort their government to just take actions LIKE raising the retirement age. It's AMAZING. The tea Partiers should be lauded.

And you Skippy, you call them loons. Unbelievable.

As I drove home I listened to Jason Lewis (talk radio), and he was right - the real financial crisis in the US is not a percieved 'wage gap', it is the deficit and debt, combined with unfunded pension liabilities in the billions from public employee unions.

Skippy - the wage gap is a smoke screen.  How in the world can you defend unions that continue to demand sweet retirement programs that there is no revenue to pay?  It's my money that is used to do this.  And my wife is a public school teacher.  How can you defend two Obama budgets with $1.4 trillion deficits?

Yes I called them loons. That's about the nicest term I have for them. I hold them in the contempt they richly deserve. Serious about governance and spending? Hardly. From what I see they are not serious about anything-save for their own hatred of the current occupant of 1600 PA avenue. And would not be President had John McCain not had to spend inordinate amounts of time groveling to this mob. And nominating a total idiot to be his Vice Presidential candidate.

Furthermore, they are not unique. Most of their rhetoric is directly traceable to the John Birch society. The difference between then and now is that in the 1950's the Birchers did not have a large media outlet hyping them and there was a conservative like Buckley who saw them as the danger to the country and the party that they were and are.

The Teabaggers are not proposing anything workable or serious-in fact they have deliberately exempted most of the big ticket items from their cuts. And what cuts they have proposed are more than offset by the 3.7 trillion hole the extension of the Bush tax cuts causes.

So yea I call them loons and will continue to call them loons as they systematically destroy the GOP and the country.

The problem is when your taught that everyone is a racist to you, when you grow up you believe that everyone is a racist. The other issue is that when your taught the others on the opposite side of the political aisle are not only your political enemies but your social enemies, then you have the brewing of major issues. This has been increase in the last 40yrs in my mind. I seriously believe that we saw a change in both parties, the democratic party was taken over by the progressives and the older classic liberals (ie the ones that believe in the rights of man and freedom, think Carl Vinson, Scoop Jackson, Tip O'Neal, La Guardia) were pushed out following the late 60's. On the other side the conservatives who thought of the idea of someone showing up with nothing being able to become something (like Andrew Carnegie, Vanderbuilt, Rockefeller, etc) that also the Darwinian process applied not only to the animal world but also to the way humans interacted (whether in business, societies, etc) and that this was the natural order of life. Those conservatives have been pushed out by those who have taken on the supposed mantra of so-called "neo-conservatism", that is the idea not only Darwinism applies but our morality needs to apply with this as well (think that if we preserve our family/social/morals then we won't lose the Darwin battle).
What is sad is cause of these radical differences (which have always occurred through out this nation's history) in our politics it has basically caused our society to boil down to answering with 30sec sound bites and hate. I wonder if this is going to cause a balkanization of this nation or if it is going to lead to another war of governmental aggression.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Skippy-san00:03

Because like so many-you are believing what you have been told, but no the facts as they really are.

The facts are different. If you look closely, the jump in the deficit is not due to a "wild jump in federal spending" but a dramatic decrease in revenues.  Federal spending has gone up-but not as dramatically as has been portrayed. You can thank the tax cuts, the wars, and the recession for a lot of that.

A couple of other facts that Jason Lewis and the other idiots in talk radio seem to be ignoring.

    1) In every other expansion but the one under Bush-average incomes went up, about 6-8%. The rich got richer too-but all the boats got floated upwards. Not so 2000-2007. Average wages for the median American stagnated or dropped by 2%.  Not so for the top five percent-who gained on average 15% in salary.

    2) 1.4 trillion in deficts is not good but neither is doubling the national debt in eight years as happened under Bush. However-much of that was due to Bush's love of tax cuts over paying for the wars. The wars had an overall corrosive effect on the economy that is underestimated. In 2009 we were in the worst financial crisis in decades. Most mainstream economists agree that without TARP and the Stimulus we would be a lot worse off than we are.

    3) The myth that 47% percent of Americans pay no tax is exactly that-a myth. So too is the idea that unions are driving up pensions now-most of that activity happened much earlier. Unions of all types lost ground in the 2000's.

I'm not disputing that there need to be changes to pension schemes and to Social Security. But they have to be done carefully and over time. Same is true about the budget. We have to balance it first-and in the short term that means raising revenue, by raising some taxes, instituting others and cutting some others. People don't want to hear that-nor are they prepared for the other austerity cuts that will follow. Including defense. Who took the CBG's? The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that is what took them.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Skippy-san00:12

It is not about one salary for all. It is about floating the boats of all Americans not just the fortunate few.  It is not that incomes are different-it is that they are so faapart-the most they have been in decades. And this while taxes are the lowest they have been since 1930.

How am I going to fix it? I gave a detailed prescription here. And Timothy Noah has a pretty long and good explanation why the class war is actually working in reverse-its the rich who are waging class war against the rest of us and winning. He also lays out pretty candidly why you need to care about the way wages are going.

Especially when it is unnecessary. Raising the retirement age is not the answer-it is bad enough people have to work as long as they do.  The long term key is to transition Social Security to a Central Provident Fund scheme. But it has to be done over time, so as not to inject a whopping windfall of cash into the market right away that would be squandered by the so called "masters of the universe on Wall Street".  Start with people who would stat collecting benefits in 2045 and transition incrementally. A guy like me is probably stuck with Social Security+Mil Retirement+401K/IRA's.

In military cut LCS, buy whateer off-the shelf frigate/corvette fancy your mind. If it would be possible, fix the prices for all bought equipement. If the producer is running over the budget, his problem. And if possible, make sure that every contract has a point on return tot he manufacturer of the machines that dont fit the specifications. If individuals buying TV sets can expect such standards, why state cant expect such standards from their suppliers? On the tax side US would do well to tax $ to yuan exchange - at the same rate yuan is undervalued. Taxing oil imports would be good thing too. And get minimum tax rates to anyone who invests in US manufacturing base.

Ok, I read it.  Won't work. Big chunks are just bass-ackwards.

I will be brief. Need cheap, safe energy. Need state of art industry. Screw "free trade", we're being conned. Need unions, kept cornered like a rat and watched like a hawk. Need living wage, buy health care with it in nation wide market from insurance companies cornered like a rat and watched like a hawk. Sooo, need well organized, constantly updated, sensible regulations, which we don't have.  Ever read a CFR?; the organization and administration of them is bizarre. Need Tort reform, it's out of control, nutty. Need a strong STRONG defense.
Need strong financial sytem, hard currency. Need a melting pot, everybody welcome as fast as we can digest 'em and everybody must assimilate. Need secure borders, illegals got to join up and get legal or go.

See, EZ! Put that in place by tomorrow.

The ECONOMIST?  That paragon of unbiased virtue that gave us the October 2008 headline:

"America should take a chance and make Barack Obama the next leader of the free world"?

    THAT Economist?

Well, then that settles it.  Must be consensus.  Marxism Uber Alles.

Skippy, I would be able to take your feedback more seriously if you did not resort to gratuitous and crass name-calling and attacks on those with whom you disagree.  When you write for yourself, you generally come across as quite intelligent, well-informed and someone whose words should at least be weighed seriously, even if I do not agree with them.  When you use the MSNBC/Daily Kos/Huffington Post phrases (like "tea baggers") you set that credibility counter back towards zero.

    {Too bad the comments are getting spammed.}

"President Obama was elected in a large part because the American public had progressed to a point where they wanted to show that they had left a nasty part of their past behind - racism."

Do you have any data to support this hypothesis? While there would certainly be some portion of the electorate who voted based on this reasoning, there is also likely some part of the electorate that voted for Obama:

    * by mistake
    * because they were pissed at their spouse
    * because they liked his looks
    * because they didn't like Palin
    * because they didn't like McCain
    * because they liked Biden

    etc.

But to make a claim that the majority, aka "large part", was based on national racial mia culpa begs some data to back it up.

    Aubrey,

I always find it interesting when Tea Party Patrons ( Hows that for an acceptable term?) get so "outraged" at the TB word-when they are the ones who originally coined it. I use the term deliberately because I know it makes their supporters mad-and sure enough Salty Gator took the bait. As if they were the only ones who have a right to be angry this election season. I am plenty angry myself-especially at Tea Party Patrons. I'm angry at people for being so gullible that they are willing to allow themselves to be used by people who really don't care about them. I'm angry at the damage they are doing to the Republican party and the people who built the Republican party.  For all of their whining about elitism-they take a pretty elitist position themselves. ( Cue their talk about rugged indidualism etc..........it is a laugh). As a group they are some of the most snobby people I have ever met-at least here in Hicksville they are, and here they exist in droves. These folks are always out on the street corners shouting at you when you drive by. Why, I'm not sure since Republicans have a lock on all elections here in this backward chunk of real estate.

The "movement" is a contradiction of itself. It portrays itself as being educated ( lots of masters degrees)-yet it takes some of the most incredibly un-educated positions possible. Its history is by and large flawed, its interperation of the Constitution similarly so-and don't even get me started on their ideas about economics. I simply disagree with their approach and their ideas. They simple have not woken up to the fact that : 1) There is no Ronald Reagan waiting in the wings to save them and 2) The world has changed dramatically and the fuzzy world they long for is never coming back (it never existed at all). It has taken me a long while to accept that-but I have. The sooner they do, the sooner they might be able to make some productive input. And I find it disgusting they only found their anger after January 20, 2009. Most of the decisons that put us in the mess were made in Bush's first term-but they could not be stirred to take to the streets then. Basically because they approved of all of them.

So yea-I don't agree with them. And really have a hard time respecting them-because they don't return the favor.

Jay Nordlinger was the one who reported it-on NRO:

The first big day for this movement was Tax Day, April 15. And organizers had a gimmick. They asked people to send a tea bag to the Oval Office. One of the exhortations was “Tea Bag the Fools in D.C.” A protester was spotted with a sign saying, “Tea Bag the Liberal Dems Before They Tea Bag You.” So, conservatives started it: started with this terminology. But others ran with it and ran with it.

Of course Nordlinger got his date wrong-the first big, ugly , Tea Party rally was Feb 27, 2009.

    Interesting....

"Dr. Timothy F. Johnson, the black Republican who heads the National Black Republican Association, told Newsmax in an e-mail Wednesday that Obama should immediately apologize for the offensive reference to the Jim Crow era.

"Once again the president is perpetuating the racism that exists, and [is] portrayed by the so-called Civil Rights organizations and their leaders," Johnson stated.

"Americans are sick and tired of these divisive statements the president continues to make," he added. "Our first objective is November 2, 2010."

Seems Dr. Johnson disagrees with Skippy.

Skippy writes 'Average wages for the median American stagnated or dropped by 2%'.

I must by one of those 15%-ers!  Sweet - I must have crushed down those other little people, because those Bush years were my best income years, accept when they weren't. 8-)

I had great years, and a couple of down years - I'm in sales, it happens.  How do you count my income?  Do you average my down years with my up years, to prove your point?  I even earned trips to Maui and Barcelona. 8-)

Skippy - I'm making light of your point - which I'm tired of.  If wages were stagnet, or down, who's fault was it?  Corporations are in business to earn a profit.  They can't provide jobs if they don't earn a profit.  And with there being record numbers of quarters of economic growth during the Bush years, I doubt that your wage stagnation assertion is true.  I do believe that offering housing opportunities to people who couldn't afford them (bleeding hearts), did more damage to wages than your take on the Bush years.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Wharf Rat19:13

yes - I was wrong on the tax issue.  47% of income earners pay no FEDERAL TAXES.  And those making $250k pay 70% of all taxes.

We've got a moron in Mark Dayton running for governor, who says the $250k-ers should pay their 'fair' share.  Uh, I'm saying they're paying more than their fair share right now.  Wish I made enough to be part of this group! :-P

    ReplyDelete
  62. UltimaRatioRegis19:58

Well, it appears that Dr Johnson is the Vice chair of the NC GOP, but the chair of the NBRA is FRANCES Rice, a female.

Which of course makes anything attributed to Dr Johnson completely void and invalid.

If only the NYT and WAPO worked under those rules.

When the word racist is mentioned, it automatically means one of us vicious mean old cracker white folk.  Since by definition I and my related skin tone are the picture of racism, I feel it necessary to further define the term.  And if anyone should know better and avoid that type of ugly behavior it is a black person.  But since he is a mulatto, the term black racist might not apply more than 50 percent.
