Ford plug: As I push my 04 F150 through 160K miles and relegate it from work & play to just more play (yes dear, she does go offroad and tow and on the beach and 90 on the hwy) I will probably ad a 2012 Focus to the mix (which would be the 3rd Focus in the family BTW). And before any of you crank yankers start hollering well they suck, before switching to geekage I was an Assistant Service Manager at a large Metro Toyota dealer for several years in addition to other name plates of regard, foreign and domestic. The cars today are not the 1992 Tempo P.O.S. they were then.
308,000 miles on a 2000 GMC Sierra 1500 (original motor/transmission/running gear), built when they weren't Government Motors. Oil every 3,000 and tires rotated every other oil change. 90-100,000 miles out of each set of tires (sipe them). Normally, I would question the judgement someone who bought a Ford...these days not so much. I like what Mullally has done there. Picked up a 2003 bulletproof Crown Vic P71 from GSA for the boy w/ 16,000 miles on it. Support those who do it the old fashioned way - building a superior product.
Your's truly drives a 99 Escort LE with standard tranny. Wife drives a 2010 Hyundai Elantra which is a damn fine, rock solid, comfortable as hell car that with all the bells and whistles is still 5K less than the comparable Camry
My Escort is quick, nimble and more importantly gets 36 mpg driving from downtown JAX to Mayport NS day in and day out.
BTW, saw a new Fusion the other day...sweet looking ride.
Disclosure: If I hit the lottery tomorrow, I'll be looking at a maxed out yellow Camarro real soon...seriously awesome body styling for an American auto maker.
Mrs. LT B used to be a Mustang drag racer. So every now and again, she takes her Mach on the highway and shoots through the gears slamming my head against the head rest. I'm cool for about an hour in that car. After that, the modified exhaust just destroys my head. We wore ear plugs when we PCS'd in the car. Cruising the Coast in MS was fun for about an hour or so. After that, it was rush hour traffic in DC w/a jack hammer in my head. She just HAD to modify the exhaust. HAD TO. She drives the comfortable, quiet truck w/ the killer stereo more than her Mustang, I have noticed. :)
I pulled up the video for Luke Bryan's "Country Girl" (her name is Suzi Rotman) and freaking Obama had a pass this bill ad leading in to it. The RNC better get on top of this use of technology!
Love Ford though I wasn't going to buy another one some years ago when they were into actively marketing for homosexuals. Thankfully they abandoned such nonsense.

Roger that, GP. The Naval Historianmobile is a 1998 Crown Vic. Been on 2 ATs, a year's worth of IDTs at NAR Atlanta, and a 2 month ADT at Jacksonville, FL. Several trips to the in-laws, Nashville, Ft. Campbell, and all over the place.
That is why the new Caprice and the Charger are selling so well. Only rear wheel drive can handle LE duties. We may go to Tahoes when the CVPIs wear out.
The Chargers have HUGE blind spots. I have yet to see a Caprice, but am told they are a big step forward from the Impala.
I do know that they are both faster than they need to be. Federal Signal has stressed both of thier newest lightbars, the Valor, and the Vision SLR, ( I want one of those!), fot 150 MPH based on performance statistics on the Charger and the Caprice.
First because when you jump a curb at speed you don't risk ruining your drive wheels. I'd also make a guess that they're more familar with the driving dynamics, RWD tends towards oversteer. Police and taxi companies have been snapping up the last of the "Panther" chassis vehicles as Ford sunsets them. They were also loved by maintenance shops for body-on-frame making repairs easier and just plain more durabale then monocque construction.
Probably CV Joints. They seem to be the weakest piece of the front suspension on the front wheel drive cars. Definite differences in steering between the two different types.
Yes, you can easily damage, or even ruin your front end with a curb hop. FWD is no so good at going cross country, through the median, either. I also prefer the handleing of a RWD car. There is so much more useable space in a CVPI, and they have good seats. Much to be prefered to the Taurus that is going to replace them.
The do have a strange glitch in the stereo, that causes it under certain conditions to alter the volume on it's own. Sort of eerie when you are listening to Coast to Coast AM, and the radio starts altering the vulome with your touching it.
Not particularly enamored of Fords myself, but the Flex we rented for a roadtrip to Florida was pretty nice...and the Crown Vics we ran the snot out of on the Riyadh-Dammam highway at 140km/h for four hours at a stretch were plenty tough...
Interesting article. I also suspect that the large procurements of Ford vehicles (specifically trucks) for delivery to the Iraqis did not hurt too much either. The point that if GM and Chrysler were not bailed out, the resulting supplier chain network collapse would have probably pulled Ford down with it as well should not be completely ignored in a balanced analysis.
Anyway, the meme of being self reliant is a powerful American idea, so it's not surprising that this will be a largely well received commercial with a few detractors popping up until it's overcome by the news cycle.
Well, obviously, President Obama is going to have to insist that this guy "spread the wealth", since he's so hot on that capitalism stuff.
