What does Disney think of LCS-2?
No, I'm not goof'n on 'ya. If you've seen Cars 2 - then you know it isn't one of the good guys.
Even has the hull number right - and I do find it funny that even they didn't think the 57mm was mean enough looking.
Just saw the movie, there was a scene in the beginning where the LCS marked 02 and another one were raised 100+ feet to be level with an oil rig for loading. The were also scenes showing the LCS using a super strong magnet to pick somebody up, and a scene showing a 3 barrel gatling gun firing, couldn't tell the caliber. The movie had an extremly liberal bias in that it portrayed oil companies as evil, and alternative fuel as the thing of the future and much better than oil in all respects, (Pixar is from southern California).
The theme with the bad guys in Cars 2 was that they were all LEMONS!! All the cars were Hugo's, Gremilin's, Pacer's and other cars that were deficent in mechancial ability. So Disney/Pixar go it right with the LCS.
Alright, for fear of nukin' it- (and with a big SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT) - I think you missed the point, Matt and Surfcaster.
It was the oil tycoon who came up with the alternative oil, and used it to promote the World Grand Prix. But he also planned to sabotage the cars (all of which were required to use the alternative), in order to drive up the cost of "regular" oil.
The only reason that Lightning McQueen didn't blow up, it is revealed at the end, was because Sarge -- the Gung-ho Vietnam-era Jeep on McQueen's crew -- secretly kept McQueen on "regular" oil.
I'm not defending the literary merit of the plot -- it's a kids movie, after all. And while I agree that there is no shortage of media trying to out-and-out program the next generation, I don't think that Cars 2 is necessarily a good example of it. Quite the contrary.... one could argue that the take-away message is a healthy skepticism of corporate sponsorship and a trust that the crotchety old military retiree often sees the big picture. YMMV.
FCC - thanks for the heads up. We'll see over the next wek or two when the kid drags us over. But can you tell us if at least they tell the tuth about the 2 evil defense contractors and NAVSEA regarding LCS? Pretty pleeze?
PS - I'm really railing against more how much of the kids targeted programs usually roll out the "morals" about who is good and who is bad when the reality isn't always as clear cut.
I have a buddy who's unit is supposed to offer LCS maintenance and engineering support, but they are not given any work due to its interferenece w/ maintenance contract support. So, in this case, Sailors are discouraged from learning and maintenance as it will take the work away from the contractors.
Well, the fact that they associated the LCS-2 design with the lemons is telling as far as the evil defense contractors go ... or maybe it's just a coincidence. Sometimes a lemon is just a lemon.
I completely agree with your take on kid's media pushing over-simplified good v. bad. Some of the Nick Jr. shows are fantastic (Upside Down Show is a personal fave), and some are so preachy that I've literally parent-blocked them from reaching my kid's eyes (e.g., Miss Spider).

That is freaking awesome. Do you know how to tell it is TOTALLY fictional? The Disney LCS was not welded to the pier!

ahh wrong tense, LCS-2 is based on the design of two operational ferries that DO hold cars
