Our insurgent though is a happy warrior. He has decided to help us digest it a bit by making a drinking game out of it. Here are the rules:
- Slide which contradicts another slide: 1 shot
- Slide which utilizes quotation marks to emphasize exclusivity: 1 shot
- Slide which introduces the definition of an acronym which has been used for the prior 4 slides: 1 shot
- Slide in which the term "minority" is represented with more than 50% of the pie chart: 2 shots:
That makes their numbers messy. Funny thing too - they don't mention Asians in their academic stats much, do they? I wonder why? Ahem - then again - this is never about truth anyway, is it?
Sigh. Enjoy.
UPDATE: As this blog's readers continue to leave me gobsmacked with their attention to detail in outlining an unbending parade of fail that is this PPT. In case you were wondering if this was some poor NC1 who only had a few minutes to push this out in time to brief it - well - here is the CV for the author. Read it and cry the beloved Navy.
5 shots wasn't enough to make it all go away...
ReplyDeleteSlide 6, apparently the "Benefits of Diversity Emerge from a Cultures of Inclusion" but the benefits of effective communication do not emerge from incorrect use of the singular article with a plural noun. If the article choice is correct, then there can only be one "Culture of Inclusion" which might almost make some sense.
ReplyDeleteI suspect, however, that the author intended the plural noun. In this case, the correct article should have been "some," implying that the author believes not all "Cultures of Inclusion" cause the "Benefits of Diversity" to emerge. This interpretation makes sense, because the actions of the Diversity Bullies would lead one to believe that only certain characteristics are worthy of being included in their efforts.
<span>Here's my fave takeaway...</span>
ReplyDelete<span>
<p><span>"Recognize that diversity and inclusion is a national security imperative." </span><span>Really? The B.S. flag has been hoisted.</span>
</p><p><span></span>
</p></span>
Continuing on slide 6, what the heck do they mean with a Venn diagram where each element only relates near-tangentially to two other elements? Is there only a small overlap between the set of people the Diversity Bullies trust and those they respect? This chart would make me believe that they only practice engagement with a small fraction of those whom they respect, and that they do not trust any of them.
ReplyDeleteSimilarly, does this chart say that only a small fraction of their engagement efforts result in innovation, and then does it follow that the single indicator of success is innovation? What other factors relate to the large fraction of success that is not overlapping with the rest of the chart?
Slide 7 induces cognitive dissonance. How can an organization simultaneously reactively remediate, with enforced quantitative measures, past wrongs done to a legally protected class, while at the same time proactively and voluntarily providing a qualitatively inclusive environment for everyone?
ReplyDeleteThrow in "From the Sea" and you've got Salmander's blog mission statement.
Slide 9 - "Personal Habits" are a characteristic on which we must "voluntarily" include everyone? So if Fireman Timmy doesn't shower, we still have to let him hang out with us in the berthing?
ReplyDeleteNote to self - thank Odin that Ken was never on one of my qual boards .... Ken don't play.
ReplyDeleteSlide 11 - Diversity and Inclusion is "Voluntary" but leadership "Must" state the case for it. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteSlide 17 - How is the rate of matriculation to bachelors and doctoral degrees relevant to the staffing of the U.S. Navy? Many of my best sailors couldn't do mathematics to save their lives, but they certainly could lead other sailors, manage to a schedule and make sure that all our gear worked correctly. We don't need every sailor to be able to design a combat system, but we do need sailors who can execute a plan.
Slide 24 is the real killer. "Inclusion Enables ... Prosperity." Don't do this the way we tell you, and you will have no prosperity after we end your career.
I hate bad powerpoint almost as much as I hate liars and cheats.
ReplyDeleteoh, where to begin? How about with the odd-numbered slides?
ReplyDelete- Slide 3: "...a better future for our children and our grandchildren."
... Demonstrates a clear and implicit bias toward heterosexuals (wow, I can play this game, too!)
- Slide 5: "We are at war for people and we are fighting this war on three fronts: recruiting the right people, raising retention, and attacking attrition."
... Recent NAVADMINs might disagree. You know, the ones that detail we're sending over 3000 Sailors home because of "unprecedented retention and reduced attrition?" Doesn't that imply that the Enlisted Retention Boards are diversity-driven?
- ibid. "The time for talk is over. The only thing that matters now is action."
... but check out the next 20 slides!
- Slide 7: Perhaps the only honest slide in the presentation. I especially liked the "legally protected classes" part, and the part about diversity being voluntary (more on that later).
- Slide 9: "Diversity is not limited to only those differences that are visible to the eye / there is no one who is 'not diverse'."
... And what's a "two-fer" again?
- Slide 10 (throwing in an even-numbered slide to demonstrate "inclusiveness") - all three of those photos freak me out.... the infidel kid who's not praying, Grandma and her Wii, and ... the other one.
- Slide 11.
... This slide makes no sense, so read it aloud in Tarzan voice.
- Slide 13. "US Population is Projected to Continue to Become More Diverse."
... LOLWUT? I thought *everybody* was diverse, and that it wasn't just about skin color? So why isn't the chart labelled something like "US Population is Projected to Continue to Increase in number of bipedal omnivores?"
- Slide 17. "... which is only a little better than the odds of [a HS athlete going pro], which are 10 in 1000."
... Really? Because I may not hold a STEM PhD, but I believe that you're supposed to reduce that to 1 in 100.
- Slide 21, start. "Diversity is not optional."
... that's weird, Slide 7 said it was voluntary.
- Slide 21, end. "It's playing the game."
... Ah! Gotcha!
- Slide 23: "Refuse to accept stereotypes about groups."
... you mean like their collegiate attrition percentages, provided a few slides ago?
dear god make it stop
Yeah, you owe URR a beer. Not much consolation for the willful destruction of our military at the altar of a blatant left-wing political deity. There were few other reasons that repeal of DADT was pushed so hard. Those who wanted to serve honorably and not have their orientation become the issue could have done so. Now, as with race and gender, it will be THE issue, how you are defined. Welcome to the ventriloquist convention. Where NAACP and Al Sharpton speak for all blacks, NOW and Barbara Boxer carry the voice of all women, you now have GLAAD and OutFront as your voice, gay service members. Simple honorable service is no longer a consideration. Never was for them. Ever. And everyone doing the pushing knew it.
ReplyDeleteOh, and the trend will continue toward only those politically authorized viewpoints being allowed, with all others being eventually made illegal, using "hate speech" legislation similar to the Netherlands Caliphate.
Jay was wrong. Dead wrong. As were so many others who continually told us how gays and lesbians would not be considered a protected group. The pandering in this slide presentation is disgusting and shameful, but those who push it (Roughead, Mullen) are beyond shame. Political toadies masquerading in uniform.
"...and bear true faith and allegiance to the same."
"...nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."
Those two sentences are incompatible with what we see in this post. You know, a matter of integrity.
smoking in submarines?
ReplyDeleteWho knew that union membership is an aspect of diversity? slide 9
ReplyDeleteOh goodness.
ReplyDeleteSlide 6: "a cultures" (already commented on).
Slide 7: You meant "complementary". (I hope...) And unicycles do roll without another wheel...
Slide 9: Inconsistent capitalization. If you suffer from Navy Proper Noun Syndrome, then at least Suffer Consistently.
Slide 9: "characteristics that makes"? Try "make".
Slide 9: You meant "lifetime".
Slide 11: Inconsistent capitalization again.
Slide 15: "Engineering eligible" takes a hyphen.
Slide 18...is that a double space after "production"?
Slide 18: "Mathematic" should be pluralized.
Slide 20: Put a period on the 5th bullet; parallelism of style.
Side 20: You meant "counterproductive"...no hyphen, no extra cap.
Slide 21: One of your "It's" didn't have its apostrophe.
Whether you like the message or not, this is embarrasing to put out as a rep of the SecNav. Find an anal SWO, or better yet a nuke to proofread.
The one and only positive takeaway is slide 23, line 2, "stand for what's right, even if unpopular." and I already do that. It all reeks of self-licking BS. The brown shirts in the DI are all about segregation, segmentation, and self promotion. They bring zero value to the table. As Sal has pointed out on so many occassions, it is driven by the guilt of those who came to the fleet in the 70's. Today's enlisted and officers tend not to see color so much as those from past generations. This is similar in concept to fighting the last war.
ReplyDeleteI am sure Ms. Emerson is a nice person, and quite tolerant of non-minority people most of the time. I bet she is at least a GS-15, if not a SES appointee.
ReplyDeleteHowever, other than making a career out of this "diversity" scam, what has she, or her programs ever done to actually help her employers accomplish their mission? Or, make a profit, or be ready for war?
As I recall, Chrylser, although they may have been great at diversity "stuff" under the watchful guidance of zampolit Emerson, went bankrupt and was only saved by taxpayers throwing billions of dollars at them, and that was mostly to save the union pensions. Their cars suck in terms of engineering and quality, even though desinged and built by apparently the correctly diverse workforce.
As for Ms. Emerson's PPT, that is the sort of work that would get any (non-diversity approved) junior or mid-grade officer thrown off a staff. But, I bet this woman has never been told "No!" or that her work is not up to the expected level becuase no one dare confront anyone in the race hustling diversity business.
The good news is that this has identified one billet, and a person filling it that add no value to our actual readiness, and Secretary Panetta shoudl include this on the list of jobs and people to be eliminated to halp solve the budget mess. ANd cancel whatever conference this was and spend the money for actual readiness related training next year.
I will have a rotten holiday weekend (working) every time i consider the fact that Ms. Emerson makes far more money than I...
ReplyDeleteJust looked at the bio. Not one day of sea duty. I could almost allow it if the person in question was a retired chief with a good amount of sea duty--which hopefully equals understanding of the mission and the sailors.
ReplyDeleteShame on the Navy for this.
Shame.
Worked for Chrysler, huh? That diversity silliness didn't help all that much for them did it? Once again, the obvious divergence from diversity and success. Ms diversity officer. Show me the no $h!t metrics. Prove to me that getting knee deep in the 60's mentality (50 yrs ago so, yes, you are OLD and out of touch in the view of the younger generation) is a positive thing. Focusing on percentages of skin color helps us stay mission focused? Bovine excrement!!
ReplyDeleteSlide 10 - Hopefully not crew shore leave pictures, sent back in time from a more diverse 2020.
ReplyDeleteIt is TOO early in the morning to digest this...and I am ashamed to admit that Ms. Emerson got her Masters from the same school I did.
ReplyDeleteAnyone catch that she left Chrysler about the time the USG and Fiat bought it?
Only if it is done w/in the Lean Six Sigma process. Sid knows, trust the process!!!
ReplyDelete'Equal opportunity and diversity..both are required' This would be ok if the implementation didn't mean that the former (done right) gives everyone access to the playing field ready to excel or not on their own merits. Whilst the latter (done today) seems more interested in sending back to the changing rooms all players that don't fit the current quotas.
ReplyDelete<span>'Equal opportunity and diversity..both are required' This would be ok if the implementation didn't mean that the former (done right) gives everyone access to the playing field ready to excel or not on their own merits. ReplyDeleteI could go no further than slide #5, which listed Navy priorities. Manpower and diversity listed first (of course) in bold, font size 40, with those other nice-to-have, lesser important issue like current readiness listed at the bottom in font size 10.
ReplyDeleteEnglish... It's not just for immigrants.
ReplyDeleteTalent attracts Talent. Diversity attracts Diversity. Yup. And when Gary and Mikey are at the helm, they are mutually exclusive.
ReplyDeleteSigh. I thought that the USN told us that Homosexuals were not going to be a "protected class" or "part of the Diversity effort." Guess that changed real fast.
Now, sucking at your job is also a diversity trademark? DOES ANYONE ACTUALLY PROOFREAD THE DRIBBLE THAT THESE FRUITCAKES PUT OUT?!
"Equal Opportunity and Diversity...both are required." No they are NOT. EO is law. Diversity is not. Diversity is not compatible with EO. READ THE DAMN LAW.

ReplyDeleteMs. Emerson's bio. No experience except for being a Diversity Driver.
Note to Ms. Emerson: spend five minutes in the real world and then get back to us. Be responsible for something other than a gripe. Make something. Create something. Lead a team that has to develop something other than gripes. Your awards are numerous; however, they are all from your industry. It appears to be a self-licking ice cream cone.
In your brief, you discuss the need to include folks, not just have them take up a billet. You negate any success in this effort when you dumb down standards in order to "include" more people of whatever self-identified "diverse" demographic that you are targeting.
MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY REASON ALONE.
ReplyDelete.
SEMPER DIVERSE.
ReplyDeleteProposed catchy Navy motto. If I was a coffee-fetching LCDR stationed in Wash.D.C., that would get my Fitrep to stand out ! After all, what could possibly be more important than my Upcoming annual Fitrep ? I would maybe make one-star as Gilbert &Sullivan said by polishing up the handle so carefully.
1) Slide 19 lists "Immigration" as a factor that makes 17 to 24 year-olds "ineligible" for military service. Sounds like the Diversity Diva is making a plug for the DREAM act.
ReplyDelete2) The presentation bemoans the low number of STEM (Sci, Tech, Engr, Math, Med) grads. Has anyone else ever seen a member of the Diversity Mafia who wasn't a <span>non</span>-STEM graduate? Me neither.
"<span>Sounds like the Diversity Diva is making a plug for the DREAM act."</span>
ReplyDeleteYa think? The solution to this Diversity problem is, of course, throwing more taxpayer money into the pockets of those who leverage race and ethnicity as a moneymaking venture.
Exactly how many beers are you owed, in toto, URR?
ReplyDeleteI made it all the way to slide 10 before I had to duct-tape my head together to keep it from exploding....but you're right, slide 5 lit the fuse.
ReplyDeleteI really drove the case that nobody should be bothering with stupid and unimportant things like the "current readiness" and "future readiness".
Unfortunstely, rather than cutting Ms Emerson's position I expect her to get a promotion and a raise. Panetta serves at the whim of his boss, and he knows that well.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that most diversity programs are in violation of the spirit if not the outright letter of several laws (starting with the 14 th amendment and equal protection) never seems to bother these clowns. The Law of Unintended Consequences also appears to be something of a mystery to them...
ReplyDeleteA pox on them all. A plague on their houses...
Lost count. Truth be told, FCC, I would rather be wrong about these things than right. But alas, the veneer of the Potemkin Village that is politicization of our senior military officers, and things that result, like this Diversity cancer, erosion of Warrior Ethos, criminal mismanagement of our defense apparatus, all that washes away and the ugly truth is always visible.
ReplyDeleteThe very senior "leaders" of our Military in this Administration (with some exceptions) have been little more than pandering political yes-men, to the long-term detriment of our readiness and capabilities. To which our enemies are taking note.
This just might rise to the level of a bottle of good single-malt...
ReplyDeleteSo, Phib posted this last night...and he's made it all the way to this morning without one of the zampolits coming on here to attack him for being an evil minority-hating bigot who wants to destroy the world?
ReplyDeleteThe diversity hit squad is either slipping, or even they threw up a little in their mouths when they went through the slides.
I usually mutter "Subject Verb Agreement" when I spot these mistakes in power point slide presentations....sadly I the. Have to explain what I mean by that.
ReplyDeleteSigh. Even as a STEM major I was expected to speak/write my mother tongue correctly.
I know that this is a made up job/role, but why do we allow the use of the term "officer"? You are not an officer as the term is understood in a military organization so stop conflating your job title with the real officers You see around everyday at work.
ReplyDeleteThis is just as bad as organizations who hand out the title "engineer" to people who are not degreed engineers. Or as bad as one organization I know who knowingly hired an engineer with fake engineering degrees...
A picture is worth a thousand words (PPT notwithstanding...):
ReplyDeleteSpeaking from *very* recent experience-if one subset of the United States--call it "A"--has a culture that says enforcing the rules is lame and pulling what you can get away with based upon the physical strength of the guy opposing you is okay; and a second part of the United States--call it "B"--does not; and if a member of "A" is "diverse" and a member of "B" is "not"; then when "B" makes a formal complaint he will lose--because it will be called a "he said, she said" even wash, but "B" will still assume some mantle of guilt. Promise you.
ReplyDeleteSic Transit Gloria Mundia, apparently.
Oh--and if "A" makes a credible threat, including physical contact (though very slight), in front of witnesses--a way will still be found to figure out how he was "provoked".
ReplyDeleteWell, hopefully "A' is worth it, because "B" sees. You bet that "B" sees.
Even worse, many liars and cheats often use bad Powerpoint...it's an enabler...
ReplyDeleteI am sure her efforts were central to the excellent product quality and deft management culture over at Chrysler...
ReplyDeleteGlad to see she is aboard the Global Force For Good.
She'll do well.
<span>I bet she is at least a GS-15, if not a SES appointee. </span>
ReplyDelete"Highly Qualified Experts" are almost always SES/SNIS appointees. At the least, they draw GS-15/Step 10 pay:
http://www.cpms.osd.mil/ASSETS/4F2EFBEFCBB44A8E95E02E595EDE6E49/faq_highly_qual_experts.pdf
There was a paper circulating a few months ago listing FO/GO/SES cuts in DoD. Regrettably, I don't recall Ms. Emerson's position as one on the list.
I am going to figure out a way to sneak that graphic into the next staff update...
ReplyDeleteIt is the Fourth of July weekend. They are trying to figure out how to take that silly line, "All men are created equal." and add "but others will need hiring assistance and the supervisors will be held accountable for diversity." This would be their Independence Day wet dream!
ReplyDeleteThat among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.....
ReplyDeleteDiversity changes "pursuit of happiness" into
"guaranty of happiness" for those needed to fill all the new DoD quotas based more on DNA than just blindly upon abilities, knowledge, training...etc.
Her bio appears to be vegan in nature - no meat, nothing of substance.
ReplyDeletewhat do you mean "ONE organization" there seem to be a great number of them out there.
ReplyDeleteC
john: keep in mind that if she is GS15 or above or SES she can be told to LEAVE IMMEDIATELY.
ReplyDeleteshe is not subject to merit systems protection board protections.

this is almost as interesting as the day i set the boss' secretarys' computer to auto correct the big mans name to "Idiot">

Yes, look at her works at Chrysler, ye mighty. Look long, look hard.
ReplyDeleteWHAAAAT????

Then disengage and clear datum to deconflict for the Mk 48 about to go active!
ReplyDeleteI refer of course to a "war club" of Akadama Wine.
ReplyDeleteThis may just be nitpicking, but Ms. Emerson's biography states that she has a "bachelor's of arts" degree, and "master's of arts" degree, and so forth.
ReplyDeleteIn a singular reference, it is "Bachelor of Arts" not "bachelor's of arts." Same for "Master of Arts." Sweet Jesus, it's on your f'in diploma.
Also, what the hell is "external diversity"?
"bad Powerpoint"????...a bit redundant eh what?
ReplyDeleteQ: What's worse than your standard Navy PowerPoint?
ReplyDeleteA: PowerPoint with all sorts of useless clip art!
I know I threw up in my mouth reading that garbage, and I only got to page 5. We are so F'd!
ReplyDeleteThe Navy Diveristy Office needs to be careful with which groups diverse groups the Navy values (slide 10). According to DoD policy and the DADT repeal it is LGB, not LGBT.

hey now, she's got at least 4 hours underway on an MSC ship. That's practically a deployment in Diversity years.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.msc.navy.mil/sealift/2010/February/secnav.htm
And right on cue, we find that activist Federal judges legislating from the bench, decide to void the 10th and 14th Amendments to our Constitution, and make discrimination based on skin color and ethicity the law of the land.
ReplyDeleteShame on Holder, the bigot. Shame on Obama the bigot enabler.
Shame on Mullen and Roughead, the two lackeys who actively promote the same discriminatory practices in our Armed Forces.
4 hours? Slightly less time than it took me to pass my last kidney stone. I am surprised she didn't get scurvy with that much time underway.
ReplyDeleteI only referenced the org that I have personal knowledge of the situation. The diploma mills are out there and obviously there are HR departments abandoning their responsibility to check references
ReplyDeleteShe could not even manage to get time on the pond on a regular naval vessel?
ReplyDeleteShe could not even manage to get time on the pond on a regular naval vessel?
ReplyDeleteTo put this in real terms, a GS-15 step 10 in Washington DC makes at least $160K after locality pay. Add at least 25% to that for the cost of benefits, and the minimum we are wasting on this billet exceeds $200K. The Highly Qualified Expert could be at Executive Level IV, which has a $155K base. This is the same level as an Assistant Secretary, although Wikipedia says that only 4 are authorized at that level (Research Development & Acquisition, Manpower & Reserve Affairs, Financial Management & Comptroller, and Installations & Environment). With locality pay, they max out at a salary of $165K.
ReplyDeleteYou can bet she has a horde of minions, a nice office, probably a car and driver to go with all that.

BEST. COMMENT. EVAH!
Nice to see JOPA is in the house!
ReplyDeleteURR, don't mess around with those. Hope that you have culled coffee from your diet, Sir.....
ReplyDeleteMan...I was relaxing on vacation. URR, sorry pal, you are 180 out from reality (again). No new protected class... Geez, man up and quit your whining, your Sgt Maj of the USMC spoke eloquently on same recently.
ReplyDeleteDang@ I'd make silly powerpoints for HALF that! I'd even make them funny! (Not unintentionally funny.... really funny!)
ReplyDelete:-D
Jay... please resume vacation.
ReplyDelete"We are at war for people and we are fighting this war on three fronts: recruiting the right people, raising retention, and attacking attrition."
ReplyDeleteHahaha. If I was editing these I'd have changed it to "We are at war for people and we are fighting this war on three fronts: righting the recruiting people, retaining raises, and attriting attackers."
Think anyone would notice? hehehee
Yeah, it's like a Thesaurus went on shore leave and then spent the next day with its head in the toilet. Spewed out verbiage everywhere. Ick.
ReplyDeleteJhey,
ReplyDeleteYou resemble Baghdad Bob in your insistence on ignoring what happens around you. And save the "man up" crap for your favorite Greenwich Village hangout. Because other than that, you haven't an idea what it means.
What the SgtMajMC had to say is irrelevant to the issue at hand, which is an SES infecting the Navy with this forced poison.
Culled coffee from my diet? NEVER!
ReplyDeleteOne stone a couple of years ago was 8mm (!). The doctor told me like I had won a free toaster or something. "You have an 8 mm kidney stone!!!"
Lotsa cranberry juice. But they will never go away completely. Residue of years of boxing, I'm afraid.
An example of External Diversity
ReplyDelete--- "<span> Residue of years of boxing, I'm afraid.</span>"
ReplyDeleteURR - that works to explain your face, but kidney stones?
One tends to take a beating almost everywhere. Especially in training sessions. Many a morning the pee would be pink/red.
ReplyDeleteIs that you, Padraic...? Methinks me knows you
ReplyDeleteThe irony, for me anyway, is that the rampant misuse of quotas in the diversity industry, and the subsequent supreme court bitchslap they got, have actually prevented organizations that have a legitimate need for diversity for mission accomplishment from beinga ble to meet their goals. Example: SOF. They need to embed troops all over the world, seamlessly at times, which creates a bona fide NEED for a variety of skin tones and ethnicities. The guy who you can pass off as a Chechen can't blend as well in Somalia and vice versa. However, rather than being able to just be honest and say "we need x number of drak skin candidates for task force infiltrate the Congo" they're stuck with the "NO! Quotas = EVIL! NO QUOTAS!". So the push for irrelevant diversity has had an adverse impact on the ability to select based on legitimate diversity needs. Meanwhile we are still pushing for insiduous de facto quota systems in areas where there is no compelling need.
ReplyDeleteI dunno...I find that amusing.
Without knowing or defending Ms. Emerson's record at Chrysler (although I'm sure she represented a cost, not a profit, center), a majority of Ma Mopar's problems from the late '90s through her acquisition by Fiat (and USG) were caused by the Keystone Kop Krauts who said "Ve are mergzink"...then turned around and drained all the cash from Auburn Hills...
