Well, tax-payer supported Kirk Savage has some thoughts. You really should read it all - but here is a taste.
If our permanent state of war can ever be suspended long enough to allow new war memorials in the capital to go forward, the realities of injury and trauma may emerge front and center. Traditionally, American war memorials avoid the wounded and idealize their soldiers (think of the statues at the Korean and Vietnam memorials). Perhaps in the future, the figure of the disabled soldier will become a new icon for monument designers.What a hate filled, little man. As we go through Memorial Day, remember that a not-small part of the US population are in alignment with Savage. Wait until you have to do a job interview with one and they ask you how broken you are for having served. No, I'm not kidding.
It is also possible that enough time may pass for us to begin to recognize the injury and trauma that have been unleashed on other people in the wars we have fought across the globe. If we are ever authorized to build a monument to the war in Afghanistan or Iraq, I hope we will have the wherewithal and heart to honor their losses — the countless Afghani (sic) and Iraqi civilians dead, wounded and orphaned, caught in the crossfire of our global war on terror. For all our differences in culture, history and allegiance, we share with them the fundamental human cost of war.
Well, bless his heart. He needs real men to preserve his right to denigrate his government and his country. Must make him mighty mad that dependence upon his betters. I'd love to see how he'd fare railing like a child under a Saddam Hussein or a Mullah Omar.

Jennifer, I am glad you have the freedom to write this. I just hope you realize that the "killers" we memorialize today are those that stood between other killers who wanted to kill you and end our way of life. Think of the alternative if good men and women had not stood up to the barbarians that our country has faced since some other brave men founded this country centuries ago.

ReplyDeleteVolunteer firefighters don't have to respond when your house is burning. In my home town, there are sections of town that firefighters don't respond to anymore. And it isn't the POOR PART OF TOWN EITHER. Nope, that's where the firefighters come from along with the middle class. See, where I grew up, in the North East (God bless my heart DB), the richest folks are the most liberal, but they want the liberal social experiment to be played out on the masses, not themselves. And that includes messing with the firefighters even though the organization is volunteer. Additionally, in schools they discourage any discussion of religion, military service, honor, they try to make little boys little girls, and republicans / conservatives are pure evil.
So you are right, liberals, BURN BABY BURN. But it isn't your draft card, it is your house.
Call me if your kid is trapped, else you're hosed. We fight your wars, we fight your fires, we are your cops, your paramedics, your kids coaches. All volunteer. But we aren't your CHOMPS.

ReplyDeleteOf course what would i know i make barely a fraction or that by working 8 hrs a day sometimes 7 days a week (in the summer i can work for over a month straight without a day off) in temps anywhere from 80's to over the 100's with horrible humidity while working in hard physical labour.
I've always found it interesting how the most arrogant ungreatfull of people can live such high lifestyles.

I am sure that she like Mr. Savage believe that if we just apologize for our mistakes and sing kumbaya while hugging everyone it will bring the garden of eden back to the world. She and her educated friends fail to understand is that humanity is animialistic at its nature and for as long as you own something I want, well I will resort to violence to get that thing. I think that Mr. Savage being an Art Major helps explain a little bit about his misunderstanding about Memorial Day. Remember that in Art you either absoutlely hate something or you absoultely like something. In the art world there is no in between. So I am glad to see his hatred laid bare simply cause it helps to explain as the good CDR has talked about in the past with the anti-war/crowd is that as we seperate more and more of our population seperates itsself between the constant school going crowd and the folks who want to do rough duty in the service and prove their citizenship we will see only more and more of this hate coming out. I am leaning more and more in our nation that maybe Heinlien was right to be a full member of the nation with all the rights you need to do work in proving your citizenship. Whether that is service as a police officer, fire fighter, military, or some similar service corp providing something tangiable (like the old CCC from pre-WW2 time frame) to the country. If you're not doing that then you don't deserve the right of being a voting member of the nation.

And who expects everyone else to subsidize his brilliance, whether they want to or not.

SG - if the volunteer firefighters in your town have any honor, or sense of service, then there is no section of your town that they wouldn't perform a rescue mission. If what you say is true, they sully the name of volunteer EMS folks nationwide. As a former volunteer EMT, I find that disgusting. What. A. Shame.

AW1 Tim, there is one step further... Mill was writing that in the good old times when war was waged by the military against military, and mostly in the empty fields. But then some... things happened. Like industrial war, Nazism and Bolshevism. And recently Muslim extremism that doesnt get proper name yet. And sometimes, there is only choice of dying fighting or dying on enemy's terms... There are enemies that dont accept tribute, encircle you so you cant flee and exterminate you without mercy. You can accept a temporary loss of freedom if there is no chance of winning it back... but sometimes enemy is not after your freedom or your wealth, sometimes he is after your very existence.

ReplyDeleteThese "killers" as you refer to our heroes, only killed because they were directed to by our elected civilian leaders. We do not go out unilaterally and execute wars unless we are directed to. War is politics & diplomacy by other means...we are but tools to implement whatever national strategy has been directed.
We did not begin the War of Northern Aggression (despite the moniker), WW1, WW2, Korea, Viet Nam, Grenada, Panama, Gulf War I, OIF, OEF or countless other brush fires. The military followed the orders of our elected civilian leaders.
Kids starting in the military make a fraction of their employed peers, frequently work 18 hour days seven days a week while deployed. And many do that to serve their country...your country...they serve you. They enable you to freely make statements such as you have.
That's dedication. That's heroism. Give them the respect they deserve.
All three quality brands with outstanding reputations and storied histories! I've had the pleasure of riding all three...although I'm just a firefighter. I leave the driving and pumping to the experts!

You haven't responded to these people's houses, been burning yourself as you try to vent their roof and have them shouting at you to mind this or mind that while you recall that they and their ilk were just trying to imminent domain your firehouse just the week prior, of which your membership is the sole owner, not the town or county or state.
My brothers and I have protected more life and property that I can shake a stick at. We're the kind of guys who rush into burning buildings with tarps to protect your Steinway piano even as the house is threatening to come down around us just so--by chance--if it doesn't, we don't want to flood your prized possession.
Final point, Jay: if your attention to detail in an EMT rescue mimics your reading comprehension, I hope that your organization carried outstanding malpractice insurance.
this jennifer reminds me of when i was going to school in the sixties. it was an age when all of the guys were trying to dodge the draft and all of the gals were edging them on.
ReplyDeletethe school was a land grant school and because of that they had an extensive ROTC establishment for both army and air force.
the liberal arts contingent (it was an engineering school) was constantly up in arms about the rotc thing and it didn't help when an army major attached to the school used to challenge the top end courses of the philosophy and history departments and pass the challenge exams with flying colors. (he supposedly did the philosophy exam with a 98% grade by flipping a coin). they simply could not hoist it aboard that military were not simply knuckle draggers that should take orders from their betters.

I can't help but wonder if jennifer is the person who spit at me in the Houston airport when I returned home from boot camp in '71. She was unkept, smelled bad and hurled a number of foul sentiments at me, including the standard "baby killer." I dodged the phlegm, but I'll never forget the look in my father's eyes (WWII vet).

Our heros, our brothers and sisters, certainly did NOT have these people in mind in their dying moments. no. they thought of their loved ones, your families, their friends, certainly their God, but they did not think of some worthless punk running his mouth, spitting on the flag and hating his country. Lord, what a horrible last thought to think of. Thank God we know it not to be the case. Our friends, comrades, fellow Americans die for WORTHY causes. For Freedom! For Life! Liberty! Pursuit of Happiness! for loved ones, for friends, for those next to them in the line of fire. for America.
