The Navy as art

Fleet Week 1945 in New York City.

  1. Sweet shot of the old Enterprise!

Not sure she ever made it seaward of the Verrazano Narrows again after that pic was taken...

Damned shame she wasn't saved as a museum...Lotsa folks thought so at the time.

BTW wasas going to send this link along, CDR, as grist for Retro Wednesdays.

Look at that pollution.....definately a different time. One of my favorite all time pics is one of Brooklyn Naval Shipyard with four or so Carriers inport. It is amazing the amount of pollution there in the 40's.

Interesting. I have seen photos of ships at Fleet Week 1945, with thier names if block letters down the side. I particulary remember ALABAMA with some DDs around here. They must only have painted it on the starboard side. I have never been to NYC, would they have moored starboard side to Manhattan?

    ReplyDelete
  4. They moored then in the lower Hudson (in '76, my ship went all the way to Albany)..As the Enterprise did during that event.

I don't know when they stopped painting the names of the ships in large block letters amidships for Fleet Week.

I see in the pic above the Enterprise has the name painted (light colored block below the hangar opening), but in that other pic its not clear it was there as she was standing into the harbor.

Friedman has some of those pics in his books with the names showing.

Oh, OK, I am looking at this on a DELL Inspiron notepad, and my 6X8" screen does not have good enough resolution for the ENTERPRISE to show up.

    Sid - amen.

I just flew over ex-USS North Carolina BB 55 coming into Wilmington for USS Gravely DDG 107 commissioning, and what a sight. She looks great, with the 1943 paint scheme. I went over pier side after she closed for the day to get a close up, and she looks good.

What I meant to include in last post was that if NC and Alabama could be saved, seems hard (and a shame) to believe that Enterprise couldn't be saved. And I just contacted the new Olympia group, suggesting that the best way to permanently save Olympia is to get her up and out of the water. If shipyards can use a floating dock to launch, they clearly can reverse the process and get Olympia up and out of the water. It wouldn't surprise me if people want to keep her in the water, which I understand. There's a DE in Texas or LA that is out of the water, U 505 is now inside, HMS Victory is in a concrete cradle. I don't know if something as big as Olympia can be saved out of the water, but with her hull condition...................

  9. Steve16:24

Togo's flagship from Tsushima is embedded in concrete up to the waterline, (you can see it clearly on Google Maps!) so yeah, it could be done for Olympia, too. :)

  11. That DE in Texas is the USS Stewart, one of only two left in the US (the other is in Albany NY) was floated up out of the ground by the storm surge from Hurricane Ike and the USS Cavalla next to her nearly was.

Some months later they found a boat under her!

She was in poor shape before, so I'm not sure if she will ever be put back or just scrapped in place.

As for moving the Olympia...She may not be able to be moved! The USS Texas will have to be cofferdamed because the only shipyard that can take along the Gulf coast is Avondale (Todd in Glaveston closed some number of years ago, and that floating drydock went overseas somewhere), and there is concern she would sink before she got there.

The Alabama has been encased in mud for some number of years and may have to be cemented below the waterline. TheYorktown is in very poor shape, as is the Laffey.

I read recently that the lights were turned off on the Salem because that foundation had not paid the power bill.

I also hear the North Carolina and New Jersey have significant issues as well.

    Its sad....

  12. the only shipyard that can take along the Gulf coast is Avondale

Make that the closest as Pascagoula could take her too....and of course its not at all certain she would be rfloated in any better shape.

I wonder if that was an end of the war kind thing. I have seen photos of Japanese ships after the surrender with the same thing-name in large block letters on the side amidships.

  15. Qm, it was actually a prewar thing...

There are pics from the '39(?) Fleet Week with the midships names.

  16. As this is an homage to "Navy as Art"...

    We gotta remember Cadmus

Back in the day when liberty was...well.

More here...which reminds me of some scenes in Naples I once witnessed on Shore patrol...And which is why I have PTSD today....

What a wonderful ASW platform. I wonder how many blimps you could buy for the cost of one $277 million dollar P-8?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Mike M.17:06

The airframes are pretty cheap. It's the avionics that break the bank...either way.

But a blimp with a good dunking sonar or towed array has potential.

  19. QMC(SW)(ret)21:13

I know pre-war Japanese DDs had their names on the sides in katakana. What I was talking about was post-surrender with the names in romanji, the Latin alphabet. If you can get hold of Fukui's "Japanese Naval Vessels at the end of World War II" there are quite a few examples.
