ReplyDeleteLemme see, new Plebes in 1937 graduated in 1941. Good thing they had the nonsense taken out of them before June week (err, the third reel). They had bumpy a next four years after graduation....the real ones, not the archetypes. Of course, back then the producers and directors and writers didn't make heroes out of the scoffers and know it alls.
Wonder what you'll face, class of 14.

ReplyDeleteThere are always guys and gals like that. Remember some get in because Daddy knew somebody. It's not about the "calling" for some, it's just a good resume bullet.
ReplyDeleteA member of my company at TBS wanted to get into recon because it would look good for his political future. He had gone so far as to determine the difference in political voting capital between grunts and recon Marine.
Sad, it still happens but with a shooting war going on not so much.
Same thing happened at both academies in 1861. All of a sudden cadets and midshipmen were being graduated ahead of time and sent directly into harm's way.
ReplyDeleteSeems to me that that sort of a situation has a wonderfully sobering effect upon the mind and attitude. Brings clarity to the situation to hand.
