... and the old Cold Warrior did smile
Great Britain, United States of America, France. Red Square.
As I commented elsewhere regarding this, it's something that I NEVER thought I'd live to see. Now we gotta invite some Russkies over to DC for the 4th of July parade and all that!
Does this mean we won???? Did we win??? Did we win???! (Doesn't the winner always parade their colors through the capital of the not so winner side?)
NEVER thought I'd ever see a video like this either, Tim! I wouldn't invite them to march in the parade... but they're welcome to take part in the barbecue and the beer. They'd like that! We'll even play the 1812 Overture for them with cannons and everything on the mall!
Yeah, the Old Guard would have been nice ro see. For added goodness, we could have had their drums and fifes play the tune they played when Cornwallis surrendered. "The World Turned Upside Down".
Would have been appropriate in Red Square too, yes?
...but vid was probably cutoff as we're not considered important enough... sad considering we had 4th largest Allied force in 1945 coming from both sides of the Elbe...
BZ for Russia being able to over come the very vocal Russian Nationalists not wanting to allow foreign troops to march in Red Square.
That is the stuff that better futures are made of. That is one of the few symbolic gestures that actually transcend just being symbolic.
This gesture as well, in the speeches given had an honest tone in all that was said by the Russian government. Whether it lasts or not, I don't know. But, it is awesome right now.
Love it. French fixed bayonets too which was funny. If you noticed, the British and the Americans did not dip their colors, but the frogs did when they were doing the pass and review. The British formation commander was also out of step.
So hoo yah America! 1) In step 2) no dip of the flag (and yes our flag was taller than everyone else's in typical "America, F Yeah" mode, and 3) no silly bayonets.
I don't know what unit that is, but Lord, does it have a lot of streamers!

too bad we didn't send the Old Guard and let them wear the Revolutionary War uniforms
ReplyDeleteYou kick the a55 out of Napoleon's Imperial Guard, and you get to wear hats like that......

Nice covers, true, but kind of hard on the bears.

The unit which had the honor of marching through Red Square are members of the 170th Infantry Brigade stationed in Baumholder, Germany.

The French sure are wearing a lot of shiny stuff.
ReplyDeleteThanks, my friend!
ReplyDeleteI remember how startled I was when the Blue Angels performed at the Moscow Air Show.
ReplyDeletethe Cold Warrior may have smiled but Putin flipped the bird...
ReplyDeleteIt was the British, not the Yankees who played that tune.
