The French submarine Surcouf. Built in 1929 as a "underwater cruiser" she had twin 8" guns, and a gas tank you would dream about. She also had a seaplane and hangar to store it. Much like France itself, she contributed little to the allied effort in World War II, shot at Americans, was no threat to the Germans, was the source of rumors, was suspected of collaborating with the Germans, and ended up being either sunk by the Americans because they couldn't trust her, or was sunk in an accident. Great ship, interesting concept, superb potential; pissed away.
