Diversity Thursday

Stick with me - this is actually, I think, a move in the right direction - the Diversity Bullies are trying to hide their racialist agenda. As we usually do on DivThu ... let's use their own words against them.

So, this line is interesting.
THIS SETS FORTH THE 2012 CALENDAR FOR AMERICA (CFA12), DETAILING THE NAVY'S LARGE-SCALE OUTREACH EVENTS FOR THE COMING YEAR.

THE PRIMARY GOAL OF NAVY OUTREACH IS TO GAIN AMERICANS' UNDERSTANDING THAT THE NAVY IS A WARFIGHTING FORCE, OPERATING FORWARD, READY TO FIGHT AND WIN TODAY AND EVERY DAY. ACHIEVING THIS GOAL IS A PARTICULAR AND UNIQUE CHALLENGE. THE NAVY'S MEN AND WOMEN MAKE UP ONLY A FRACTION OF ONE PERCENT OF THE TOTAL U.S. POPULATION. INDIVIDUAL CONNECTIONS, WHICH CAN BE THE MOST POWERFUL AND INFLUENTIAL ONES, ARE NOT AS PERVASIVE TODAY AS IN THE PAST. BECAUSE NAVAL FORCES AND PERSONNEL ARE BASED PRIMARILY ON BOTH COASTS, THE NAVY IS CHALLENGED TO COMMUNICATE ITS MISSION AWAY FROM FLEET CONCENTRATION AREAS. IN 2012, THE BICENTENNIAL OF THE WAR OF 1812 PROVIDES A POWERFUL PLATFORM FROM WHICH TO LAUNCH AN INFORMATIVE OUTREACH CAMPAIGN.
Sounds real good, reasonable and the right attitude to take to reach out to all Americans throughout our nation. Wide geographic reach, both urban and rural, etc. Right?

Well .... mostly. There is something not quite right in the mix ...

When I look at the full message, my initial reaction is thus: our Navy thinks ....
1) You enjoy being patronized like a serf.
2) You are fine being lied to.
3) You are happy to be in a Navy who sees you first by your race and/or ethnicity. You know - just like the racist idiots in the KKK.

It is a good rule of thumb in life that when people cannot accurately describe what they are doing, or wrap it in words that are not reflected in the action being taken, either something wrong is being done and/or the people doing it are too ashamed or embarrassed at what they are doing to accurately tell you.

In the case of this message, we have both.

What we have is something, in a way, that is kind of funny. The racialists in their pursuit of their Cultural Marxist goal of division and sectarianism are trying, Popular Front like, to fold in their fetid mess inside legitimate exercises. In the below - note the bold. Those are actually legitimate inclusive events.

The non-bold? Those are sectarian and racialist organizations and activities that we continue to support. Amazing - we continue to send money and good will to organizations that look at people at the most superficial way possible - retrograde in the extreme.

THE "NAVY 50-50" PROGRAM WILL SEND NAVY
LEADERS TO THEIR ASSIGNED CITY FOR 2-3 DAYS OF HIGH-LEVEL ENGAGEMENTS WITH CORPORATE EXECUTIVES, CIVIC LEADERS, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, UNIVERSITY PRESIDENTS, NON-PROFIT EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS AND SENIOR EDITORS AND JOURNALISTS FROM THE MEDIA. MORE INFORMATION ON THIS NEW INITIATIVE WILL BE FORTHCOMING SEPCOR.

Good news? Yes. I will take this as another victory on the way to a just, non-discriminatory, and color blind Navy. The Diversity Bullies are hiding. You only hide if you have something that needs to be hid. Well, either that or we are institutionalizing sectarianism. If the latter, well congrats; "Through Division there is Unity!"

    So for over two years studies have shown that while everyone likes sailors, no one in America knows what the Navy's real mission and imortance is?  Well whose fault is THAT?  Global force for "good" (whatever that is) means nothing.

    Hard to be able to convince congress to keep buying ships when no one knows why they're important and what we really do with them.  (No, they are NOT big lunch kitchen platforms for handing out sandwiches and blankets.)

    The reason is that I get emails on a regular basis by some of the POC in these messages. They generally give me a version of, "This is only my job - I know it is BS and yes I agree with you, but this is my job." These are good people in tough situtations.  Then again, I also get emails from people in these messages who call me all sorts of nasty names and threaten me etc ... but the good people emails FAR outnumber the nasty emails.  I redact for them. If someone wants to bother one of the footsoldiers, then they will have to get their POC info from someplace else. The footsoldiers are only doing their job - it is the senior leadership which is ordering them to.  Until we get the right court case, they are following lawful orders. I can't blame them for that. I too followed lawful orders that I thought were a disgrace (see Haitian embargo of mid-90s and some of the excessive TLAM strikes done during DESERT FOX) - but I carried them out any way.

    So, in summary - I redact out of manners, in a fashion.

  7. Yeah, watch out for those Professional Engineers - totally sectarian! How dare we have a professional society for just engineers!  Who do those engineers think they are?  Besides, we don't need any freakin engineers in the Navy!

    And yeah, Chinese New Year Parade - everyone knows they only let the slant eyes into that event. 

    And don't even get me started on those women nukes and engineers! 

    Seriously, if the biggest problem is that the Navy is reaching out to diverse groups...so what?  My guess is most, if not all, of those actual events are inclusive and not exclusive to a particular group (although I won't vouch that some of the missions of these groups might be questionable).  Society of Women Engineers actively tries to include men!

    I have no idea why you are so against recruiting diversity (and I don't mean preferences or quotas).  People with like interests and backgrounds will always form groups and associate, whether formally or informally.  At the worst, its just another lobby group.  At best its just another way and another audience for the Navy to get its message out there and recruit. 

    The important part is that at some point folks put aside their differences and work toward common goals in the Navy or as Americans.  Just because they are part of some hyphenated professional society doesn't mean they can't do that!  Celebrating diversity does NOT need to be divisive.  That's not saying that it can't be taken too far and made divisive but I think you are overreacting and overreaching.

    KR, I am all for (d)iversity - all fair minded people are. What I am not for is (D)iversity. (D)iversity as it is practives picks through acts of commission and omission winners and losers based on race, creed, color, or national origin. The Navy should never discriminate, which by giving preference to one group or another (which you do by allocating time and effort specifically based on such things) the Navy is doing.

    Also - what about those of us who are mixed race? Where do they fit it? What about those who are not given special attention - are they not needed as well?

    The march of our nation towards meeting the ideal of "from many one" has been to get rid of those things which divide us - race and ethnicity. (D)iversity is a retrograde force that is pushing us apart. I support equality, inclusion, and unity.  If you support sectarianism and division - than that is your choice.

    Also, for the record, you are the only one to use an ethnic slur in this thread. You may want to ponder your own world view a little more.

  12. I think you choose to stereotype these groups by insisting that they support sectarianism and division and that everyone who belongs to them or goes to one of their events supports that. 

    The thing about preference is that the Navy isn't giving special attention or preference for anything to these groups.  Its about the Navy speaking about the mission and showing the flag.  Anyone is more than welcome to come to the Chinese New Year's Parade and hear about the Navy mission.

    And as far as my own world view, I'm an asian female.  Obviously you missed the sarcasm, but the point is no one gets excluded from Chinese New Year'ss based on not being Chinese or asian looking.

If you have read DivThu over the years, just follow the tag if not, you will see that a lot of time, money, and TAD funds are spent supporting these institutions and like minded groups which are based on one thing - ethnicity/race. Some ethnicities/race groups get the Navy to support their events, some ethnicities/race groups do not.  That is sectarian - that is showing preference.

    The right answer is to support organizations and events that do not have an ethnic/racial aspect to them. By nature, they are exclusionary as LazyChop describes.  Some, like La Raza (which USN/USMC has supported over the years) are openly racist in their founding, and sectarian in their actions.

    As for your sex and ethnicity; it doesn't matter or is germane to this post. I would also ask if anyone of any ethnic group is allowed to - and I quote you - use this terminology? "<span>... they only let the slant eyes into that event. </span>"

    We just had a VAQ CO fired partly for using milder ethnic comments than that to an officer of mostly Korean extraction.

You are confusing the issue again. In this case the Navy is not providing any funds or money to those organizations.  Its more that the Navy trying to sell itself to folks attending those events.  Navy is not supporting those events, the events are providing a platform for the Navy to speak.  Once again, pretty sure certain ethnicities are NOT being prevented from attending those events to hear the Navy speak.   And surely anyone has access to the Fleet Weeks and various other Seafairs and the like.  So really, no one of any race is being excluded. 

    And once again, with respect to those scholarships given by private organization - they are not being given by the Navy but by private organizations.  I find nothing divisive about that with respect to the Navy.  That is a private organization's right to free association.  Besides seriously, there's a freakin scholarship for everything.  Scholarship's for union workers kids, for alumni, for gay kids, for students with every interest and background imaginable.  I don't consider that divisive in any way with respect to a private organization's desire to promote whatever they want.  You can create your own organization for boring old white guys and create a scholarship for that if you like.  :-P

    As far as the slant eyes, no issue with anyone saying it in the context of this discussion, amongst friends, on a blog, to make a point and in a tongue in cheek manner.  And yeah context matters.  Certainly not in a professional situation where it is directed at someone or could be misinterpreted.  Or perhaps I assume too much and folks on here are pretty PC and it has been misinterpreted.

    I completely disagree. By putting these events on an official calendar, and sending senior personnel to represent the Navy at them (and spending Navy $ to do so, while cutting manpower with the other hand), the Navy is absolutely "supporting" them. Perhaps not in any direct financial sense, but they are showing a direct solidarity with the causes of those groups. Do you think the Navy would officially represent itself at an "undesireable" event? Example:

    "<span>You can create your own organization for boring old white guys and create a scholarship for that if you like."</span>

    I'm not an old white guy, but never in a million years would that be "supported" by the Navy. Ask yourself why that is.

    Aside: Where's the love for some large rodeos? Talk about a wasted recruiting tool...

    There certainly are costs to attend these things. 
    Registration fees- maybe $100 or so (or more).
    If the Navy will have a booth/table, figure another $500-$1000 (or mroe).
    Add in TAD costs for a senior person to attend-  probably another $150 per day plus transportation, and if sufficiently senior add on a couple of gofers who will cost nearly as much.

    True, not megabucks, but multiply that by the number of events listed and pretty soon you are talking real money.

    And, if there was an "old white guy" group you can be sure they would not rate a visit by a senior person.  Maybe a Shore Patrol raid to escort IG investigators, though.

    Other than proving that PCness is alive and well, this is a total waste of money and promotes the opposite of what it intends.

    I did school in FL and know beach volleyball well.  If the Colombian or Swedish women need training, I can coach'em up.  Teach them the importance of staying low, knees bent, flexibily leaning forward and hips back preparing to jump or sprint, hands active, ready for the bump, set or spike.  Much jumping up and down at the net is important to build those muscles.  I would do this to foster better relations between our country and theirs.  I'm a giver.

    On one of my force protection teams, I had a Korean sailor.  Clearly had the features of that ethnicity.  His name was O'keefe or something like that.  I looked at him and said, "You are of Korean ancestry aren't you?"  He laughed and said, "Yes, sir.  I am adopted.  The funny thing is, my dad is from Ireland, so I learned English with an Irish accent.  You should have seen the looks I used to get as a kid!"  :)   Diversity, we don't need I heart "insert race/gender/sexual orientation/religion" meetings.  Just serve with your sailors, let them tell their stories, share the backgrounds from all the places we have traveled and in which we grew up.  Stand a whole bunch of mid watches and tons of information, stories and cultural differences come out.  The boy from LA (state, not city) talking about having to spit on the floor if a broom crosses your feet for instance.  Go to sea, out in the field, eating MRE's and you don't need these stupid freaking meetings.
