He was a rare a man and a true gentleman. The love of his life was by his side day in and day out. Him and his wife shared a love that was a wonder to see and share. He was proud to have served him country and the stories he told were loved by all. I miss you Bill ,the world is a sadder place without you here. I know that you are standing tall with your service members and Masonic brothers.ndouglasnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7704146.post-64745061059887258202010-01-23T08:57:26.000-05:002010-01-23T08:57:26.000-05:00And so the greatest generation continues to pass.
...And so the greatest generation continues to pass.

Sad that he is now gone. Glorious that he lived.

I was a bit taken aback by his obit: "...preceded in death by his son, two granddaughters..." -- that's defnitely NOT the way it should work in a fair world. Too bad we don't live there.demontjoienoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7704146.post-47007990229529100852010-01-22T19:07:31.000-05:002010-01-22T19:07:31.000-05:00The F2A3 Buffaloes flown by VMF-211 on Midway were...The F2A3 Buffaloes flown by VMF-211 on Midway were nearly 1,400 pounds heavier than the F2A1, with the addition of armor plate and self-sealing tanks. It went from being a nimble, agile a/c with a decent climb rate to one that was sluggish and badly underpowered. Roll rate and climb rate fell drastically, as did turn radius (due to the much higher wing loading). Maximum speed and service ceiling actually fell slightly between the -2 and -3 models.

The design requirements in 1935 did not, to my knowledge, include the armor and self-sealing tanks.UltimaRatioRegisnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7704146.post-49080259236038261322010-01-22T17:02:47.000-05:002010-01-22T17:02:47.000-05:00Brewster had many problems with QC that stemed fro...Brewster had many problems with QC that stemed from a employee union that was one of the unions successfully infiltrated by the Communists in the late 30's. When union demands were not met by the evil oppressors in management, the workers would put out sub quality workmanship to get even. The Brewster F-3A Battlers, (the Brewster built F4U Corsairs), were so shoddily made that they never left the CONUS, being used by the USN and the FAA in Florida and Illinois as traing aircraft. Like the rest of you chaps, I know the Buffalo left a very great deal to be desired, but I still like the strange little bird, for some reason. I agree with the Marine, who said it belonged in Florida, not in the PTO.SCOTTtheBADGERnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7704146.post-80829621444619880062010-01-22T11:25:10.000-05:002010-01-22T11:25:10.000-05:00One of my favorite airplanes also, but maybe the d...One of my favorite airplanes also, but maybe the drawbacks as stated weren't the designer's fault based on what was originally accepted...

"Pappy" Boyington observed: "But the early models, before they weighed it all down with armor-plate, radios, and other [equipment], they were pretty sweet little ships. That significant advantage was lost later on against MiG's, Yak's, and Lend-Lease fighters.bobblenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7704146.post-85091496216530857922010-01-22T11:24:49.000-05:002010-01-22T11:24:49.000-05:00Another Marine to stand guard at the Gates of Heav...Another Marine to stand guard at the Gates of Heaven.
