You may decide to count the nacent democracies like Egypt and Iraq but realize that the only Arabs with the right to vote in free elections in the last 50 years have been Israeli Arab citizens.
(2) Israel provides critical intelligence support for American interests than you realize. Without Israel, the US would still be involved in the Middle East in a resources battle with other nations. The Iranian caliphate didn't just pop up because of Israel - the battle is with Islamic extremism which would run counter to US aims in the region regardless of the presence of Israel. With that said the advancement of US policy and economic interests benefit from a democratic partner in the Middle East.
(3) If we took a political realism view of Israel, the answer to your question might not be as obvious. Why support a nation that is one of the flashpoint of controversy in the region? Realists ignore the simple fact that the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is noise, simple noise kept alive by dictatorships and criminal governments to keep the focus of their populace away from internal problems and onto an external source of all blame. A familiar refrain that points back to a certain nation in the 1930s as an instructive example of distraction ad casus beli. Why would the US decide that “noise” trumps support for the only democracy in the Middle East? If the fear of angering a populace or losing economic trade is so strong then why don’t we dump Taiwan, Japan and Korea in favor of excellent relations with China?
(4) I think that ultimately, Americans tend to favor nations who exercise the full scope of democracy (elected officials, institutions, deliberative process) when exercising military options through civilian control – a process that is familiar to Americans. Americans can also see through the trees on this one: Gaza is not occupied by Israel, Hamas does not recognize the Israeli state, Hamas has been declared a terrorist entity by the US State Department, Hamas continues to log missiles at Israel in it’s quest for “peace”. Simple calculation: stop sending missiles, Israelis won’t bomb you. I think most of us can see the logic involved here.
(5) The same logic test will apply should Hezbollah’s masters in Iran decide to cause trouble – make no mistake, Iran is pulling the strings on the Hamas puppet to distract from Syria and elsewhere.
Ronbonoreply@blogger.com
