There is a difference between speed and power, grasshopper. Always have the anchor ready to let go, manned and standing by, it's not the best brake, it's the only one you have.
I could go on, but this guy isn't sailing on a licence any more.
There is a difference between power and speed, grasshopper. The aviators have a term, "crosswind", we have one "sail area". Wind acting on the side of the ship when combined with current acting on the hull produce set and drift. Pilots know these things and many others.
If you don't take a tug, all you have to slow the ship is backing and using the anchor as an emergency brake.
Never hesitate to take a pilot and tug. Never fully trust a pilot or a tug.
The Captain of the ship shown is doubtless no longer sailing with that company, or likely, with a license.
USS Ship back in 91 hit the pier in Dominica (small eastern Carribean island country). Single screw ship with no tug trying to go pierside. Almost had it but a wind at the last second pushed us up into the pier. Paint scrapped on us and a 2-3 foot chunk of the pier taken out. Had to do the port call for show the flag reasons.
come on Phibian that is an OLD video. And the whole point of bringing a ship into breaking yard in that part of the world is to get it as far up on the beach as possible so it can be cut up~
With regards to the accident, I think we can look to the right and reference what CDR is drinking as the root cause. Way to go CDR, give someone a decent beer and look where it leads!!
You got me fair and square. There will be a cold supper. Revise my post to "Isn't inertia awesome?"
(which would be better, waking up buck naked in mid greenland or the Barry Goldwater Bombing Range in the SW corner of Arizona in mid August. Much to consider...)

ReplyDeleteThey aren’t docking the ship, they are running it aground so they can scrap it.

'Ya think?

Like DJF said.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering why it was titled FAIL.
Like stacking cars in a junkyard, doesn't look pretty but it works.

Isn't inertia awsome?
For the record ...... I didn't make the video, I just posted it.
ReplyDeleteUnless they meet that companies diversity quota.

ReplyDeleteIt was an intentional grounding.

ReplyDeleteDude. Can't I have fun? Wasn't my title cheeky enough?
ReplyDeleteGeezzzzz people. See if I ever post something weird again.
Phhhhhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!! "Moored, Shift Colors!"
ReplyDeleteGee Sal, can't you tell when someone is pulling your leg? Turn about is fair play after all, and you were the one who started the games.
ReplyDeleteI was sitting there trying to figure it out....then i was like wait a minute isnt that bow coming on fast?....

ReplyDeleteDonchyah -just once- covet the opportunity to do that?
ReplyDeleteAlthough it has to be a melancholy moment when you've killed a once proud ship...
