As you know - the thing our Navy needs right now is another acronym laden pet project of someone's that is a redundant TAD/BSC vampire of a time suck.

Good googly moogly this reaks of some non-warfare qualified and/or paid consultant's self-justification project. Let's put the entire Navy under a PhD in Social Work, why don't we? Just step back and ponder the amount of work that would have to be invested in this program if it was taken seriously and executed Fleet-wide.
Sounds nice? Sure? Something that needs to be slathered on top of everything else we have - at least a half-dozen which already have it in their charter to do? No.
The nanny-state Navy. And someone's looking to put their feelings to work and garner a medal. Urggggggggghhhhhhhh.
ReplyDelete"nanny state" meets "zero defects"...if we just brief the young'uns often enough, they won't do bad things.
ReplyDeleteNewsflash for leadership: young sailors (airmen, soldiers, Marines) will screw up. It's called "being young".
I guess VADM Ferguson was never a parent, or has forgotten what being the parent of teenagers is like. Meanwhile, combat effectiveness and productivity slip for all, because we're trying to eliminate the last 5% of the risk.
I saw this and thought, "The irony is palpable. I mean isn't this program a destructive decision?" Absolutely needless and stupid. Deckplate leadership from N1, right?
ReplyDeleteDude, the idea looked GREAT on his FITREP though!
ReplyDeleteInteresting that the ROTC guys get to play, but no mention of USNA. I guess the midshipmen of USNA are immune to the influences this program is intended to counteract.
ReplyDelete<span>This just makes me CSADD</span>
ReplyDeleteWhat the hell is this. the second coming of the Tempereance Movement? When are they going to issue tamborines...blueberry and OSHA approved of course!
ReplyDeleteHowever did I lead my sailors wiihout this kind of guidance??? I guess the leadership today can just put it on autopilot and relax now thwt we have a plan...
ReplyDeleteI'm beginning to really appreciate being retired.
I wanna be the Typhoon Awareness Officer.............
ReplyDeleteI can't seem to get the vomit taste out of mouth. The vomit taste that was caused by reading this drivel. How about taking whatever USN has set aside for this idiotic program and give that money to the Army so they can buy M-4's for the troops. Obviously if we're (USN) spending money on this focus group feel good bullcr@p then we must surely be awash with cash and have met every requirement we, as a service, have been tasked to meet. Finally, can someone please tell me who has the USN's b@lls? Can we have them back? This is embarrasing.
ReplyDeleteMy read:
ReplyDelete"Don't trust anyone over 30, The Sequel."
Brought to you by the Hollywood types who have been pushing the message of "Adults are a) Stupid, b) corrupt c) abusive d) uncaring e) the ones who are wrecking the world, etc, etc, etc..." add to it "The Government is a) pure evil, b) corrupt, c) sometimes only inept (in a comedy) d) you get the idea." Add an overbearing dose of "KIds are a) virturous b) highly intelligent c) pure of heart d) need to have everything their own way without any notion of ever having their feelings hurt, except by the local bully, who gets the points for being cool, so they can abuse their peers and e) are the only ones who can save the planet and the universe!!!111!!!1"
Think about it: Adult males, particularly those in postitions of authority, for at least a decade or more, have been protatryed as the bad guys. Exception: In the post-feminist era, if the young guy is white, but oozing sex appeal to the young women and they can get them to pay, then...well, he's just fine.. Anyone from the Government is always hiding some conspiracy. No wonder the person on the street can buy into the GWB/DC did 9/11" mindset.
Now, we're rejecting experience, and replacing it with "judgment." Well, we have a President who said he had that and didn't need experience. Need I say more about that model.
Wasn't it the PLA that used to elect thier leadership, but has long since reneged because it cased chaos?
Someone up the chain went on vacation and foolishly left "by direction" or "acting" authority with some 25 year old. They need to be fired. Those who took advatange of this need to be admin boarded out before they do more damage. Convenience of the Govt.
Back to "DTAO30 - II:" Those 70s types are now the ones sitting in the halls of power and raping their fellow citizen, in addition to population the halls of upper level academia, spewing the same subtle message, even while they are well over 30.
PS: We are getting the society we deserved by letting the school system take over parenting, and the school system has been run by the squishy liberals for a long time now, not to mention they are a union.
"old" in your handle disqualifies you...only 18-25 YOs can know.... :)
ReplyDeleteThe existing Diversity Directorate is has been on the case for years, injecting this in the minds of the mids....evidence...read it here weekly! :)
ReplyDeleteGuess I'm out, too.
ReplyDelete"Hurricane and Typhoon Awareness"? Seriously?
Oh, never mind. It's Monday, and I've far too many windmills to tilt at in the rucksack already.
The Army doesn't need any more M-4s, they need something chambered for the 7.62mm round. I'm sure we have some spare M-14s sitting around somewhere...
ReplyDeleteSorry, forgot to login
ReplyDeleteI saw this on the message boards this morning and was wondering if Sal knew about it.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you could form a "coalition" in the Navy...sounds slightly mutinous. Also a little reminescent of Mao's student Red Guards.
Puke.
I understand they have to buy back the M-14 inventory...lots went out to surplus/other militaries when we ditched them. Someone fact check me, I'm just a 'Shoe!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure there is a more modern (and lighter) weapon avaiable that will get the job done. But, what do I know, I'm just a f'n nuke with a good understanding of physics :)
ReplyDeleteIs this an effort to legislate common sense and moral values that have been overlooked during the sailor's entire lifetime?
ReplyDeleteOr is it some sort of cult of personality, sort of a "Mullen Youth" movement?
Or a CYA move so any problem cen be laid on someone else's failure to comply with crap like this instead of the basic notion of individual responsibility for choices people make?
In any case it is a total waste of manhours/womanhours/don't ask hours
This puts zero ordnance on target, trains no one to fight their ship, or even chips any paint.
What a crock!
Who is N1 that keeps releasing crap like this and the diversity drivel? There is a body and billet that we can do without!
John, et al
ReplyDeleteI think this is an effort to "reach out" to our younger sailors and also an effort to show that the Navy is cool and with it IRT to social networking and peer-to-peer social relations. So if the sailor doesn't understand that drinking and driving is wrong, even thought he's been told by his mom, dad, LPO, Chief, Div O, etc. his 18-25 yr old peers can.
This undermines the chain of command and is an un-military move, deterimental to good order and discipline.
3364,
ReplyDeleteUntil we take ten years and three or four billion dollars to develop a new service rifle marginally better than the one we have, the M-14, properly modernized, would do nicely.
The Navy is being tasked with maintaining it's ships, conducting warfighting training, conducting actual fleet deployments and social engineering. However, we only have the financial and manpower resources to accomplish three of those four areas.
ReplyDeleteWhich, oh which of the three should we choose?
You just gotta know that the paint on the walls inside the Goat locker is peeling from the heat being generated right now.
Are they gonna move the Navy headquarters from DC to the corner of Haight and Ashbury?
ReplyDeleteJust askin', man.
Awesome! Brilliant! Because 18-25 year old Naval personnel would ever actually get on FB and brag about their drug use and other bad life decisions! Ell naw!
ReplyDeleteWait...
....nevermind.
It'll make it easier to corral them all into one big FB page so you can stalk their pages, though.
(Is this thing going to be obligatory? Has anyone informed Big Navy of the many security holes in FB? Do we want our personnel writing things like "Dude, I'd take down that picture of you doing a carrier landing on the beer pong table!" on a forum that others could hack into?)
Can FB pictures be used as evidence at Captain's Mast? Why get rid of a great vehicle for Command Darwinism? (Unless it's a deliberate attempt to get everyone on the same FB page, so to speak?)
Hasn't Big Navy already invented this wheel? Seriously, if you want all the Navy people to friend each other, just tell them to do it and leave the therapy-sounding group title out of it!
The good thing that can come of it is when they post their financial freedom materials or their Don't Beat Your Wife materials and everyone comes and mocks it, Navy will get to eavesdrop on the real sentiments percolating among the "yutes."
Dunno... someone might learn a few things. Like, if they look at people's friends pages and see how many have billions of friends of every shape, size and color and ethnicity.
The more I think of this, the more it looks like "friending your boss" which no one in their right mind would do. So this one might die of lack of participation.
Reminds me of the student association that the Sailors had at Corry Station when I was DOT. Chiefs can not be happy with this.

ReplyDeleteAnyone remember "SAM" Magazine? It was the official E-4 and below glad rag for Soldiers, Sailors and Marines back in 78-80. As I recall, all I ever read about was people saying over and over, "Free The Non-rates", or some other initials like that.
ReplyDeleteIt was canned because it did nothing to further the mission of our Armed Forces, just like this new nonsense.
URR, My first thought exactly. This message took me back to the early '70s when the "powers that be" decided that all creative thought resided in the 24 year old Ltjg. All I remember coming out of their "rap sessions" was the elimination of the requirement to own a sword until I was a LCDR (too late...I got one at graduation), the elimination of Service Dress Khaki (Too bad since I already had two sets), and the opportunity to grow a beard (never interested).
ReplyDeleteWait hold on...
ReplyDeleteWhat this really is, is a grassroots initiative taken upon by junior Sailors and institutionalized by BIG NAVY. I became aware of this just before I left to go IA. It had ad hoc chapters that started in Norfolk (I believe) and caugt on. I 'friended' the group shortly after finding out about it, and asked to see what it would take to become a member and it turned not there wasn't much, just had to start mentoring and looking out for junior Sailors and making sure they made the correct decisions.
In all honesty, BIG Navy should have given moral support, but not started to micromanage this. It was best as an ad hoc group of Sailors doing the right thing for looking out for their shipmates, and getting together to learn how the each had the most success in mentoring.
Where this does come into re: CoC failing Sailors, is that with many E4s not truly being in a position of authority, and only having slightly more authority as an E5, this is a good way for them to start learning what it is to lead and mentor fellow Sailors. But, I do not see that happening much now that this has been institutionalized.
Think you've answered your own question with the "...if it was taken seriously..." comment.
ReplyDeleteI don't notice CNET among the Board of Advisors (unless the N135 is somehow associated with them). If so this is a fatal flaw in the involvement of the NROTC/NJROTC programs since everything you do there must have CNET's seal of approval.
The irony is that good commands, including NROTC units, already train in most of this stuff. For example my NROTC unit used to do an all hands session on driving hazards each year before the holiday season. The only difference was that it was presented by an officer of the Washington State Patrol who actually knew what he/she was talking about.
YNSN, Regrettably, Big Navy is incapable of getting involved in anything without micro-managing it.
ReplyDeleteHere is the link to the FB page. It has just on 1.5k members. As you can see on it, it started on the deckplates. Later, was when BIG Navy jumped on it.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/pages/Coalition-of-Sailors-Against-Destructive-Decisions-CSADD/299642495316?ref=ts
Youre selection is still in the wind....
ReplyDeleteAlright, now we get another advocate for the accused at NJPs, XOIs, and NJPs. And, naturally, an admin rigamarole of binders with instructions and forms and such for this program, just like what happened with the arranged marriage - er- mentorship program; another couple hours of work a week lost as this is added to the Division in the Spotlight program, too.
ReplyDeleteDestructive decisions? Y'mean like LCS, optimal manning, an endless and meaningless training cycle, and quarterly force revisions?
This is the brainchild of a certain FLTCM. Unfortunately, the beltway boys bought off on it and now its gone "Global".
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the Big Navy pancaking this perhaps-decent idea from below is illustrative of a wider mindset of how government should legislate the actions of its citizens.
ReplyDeleteHey you ground guys buy whatever you want. We don't need the money anymore because our ships are well maintained, our training and readiness is full up and all our Sailors have just been to Medical and Dental. USN is buying because we're working our bottom of the barrel" projects now and can afford to fund whatever you need.
ReplyDeleteMullen Youth. The uniform would, of course, be Service Dress Khaki. Perhaps with an "M" Armband. I wish my photoshop skills were up to the task!
ReplyDeleteTOGETHER WE CAN BUILD A SAFER, MORE POLITICALLY CORRECT WORLD!
Okay everyone take a deep breath for a second please. There is a reason for this as YNSN says, it was coming from the deckplates where the Khaki mafia are screaming that us front line leaders need to lead from. The idea was that Junior E-6's, E-5's and some senior E-4's who have made some of these mistakes (such as $ troubles, or marriage troubles) can be there to tell thier tales and hope to influence people. See the Safety Center is doing the same thing with junior safety personnel with regards for traffic issues. There some sailors are TAD'd from their commands to the Safety Center and then sent as a group to various bases to talk about DUI, Sleep driving, Cell/Text Driving, Speeding, and other stupid things. The idea being that if our junior personnel are hearing the lecture from someone thier own age then they will pay attention.
ReplyDeleteNow that someone has pay attention to the informal program, they are trying to make it a mando-fun program. That is where we as senior leadership make the mistakes. Instead of assigning this as a check in the block thing like some other GMT, it should have stayed as an informal program and been sent out as a lessons learned to the CO/XO/CMC level message. From there maybe just say this is some ideas on how to run the program and let the TyCom level or lower mandate how they want to run the program. For example if SubPac sees an issue with earthquake, check cashing, and first aid are the major personnel issues this year, mean while NavEur sees DUI/Sex/and general personal finance as their issues then that is what they will train on. THe way that OPNAV should run this is basically just assign it as a collateral duty to some O-6 or above there to basically send out a quarterly message about who the commands could contact as a clearing house for some of these issues. With the Fleet Family Service Centers at the top of the list and going down from there. That way we in the front line leadership can have the right resources to help with these issues.
But what do I know, I am just a E-6 with too much time in and watching how good programs are corrupted when they arrive in Arlington, VA.
Sir, are you saying they maybe don't need a Hurricane/Typhoon awareness program in Europe?
ReplyDeleteEF 2000 Typhoon considered, and its Tornado precedessor considered... :P
ReplyDeleteWasn't this concept first floated as a Z-Gram in the 70s? >:o >:o >:o
ReplyDelete"Now maintain silence about the decks in the vicinity of the crew's lounge during the CSADD meeting."
ReplyDeleteif we are gonna dust off old ideas.. how about we skip this shit and dust off a maritime strategy circa 1984...
ReplyDelete<span>if we are gonna dust off old ideas.. how about we skip this shit and dust off a maritime strategy circa 1984...</span>
ReplyDeletethen this "Master Chief" needs to be shot.
ReplyDeleteThis echo's YNSN and Frago, but the info I have is this was a group of junior Sailors trying to help each other out, and then some brillant Master Chief (probably served on Task Force Uniform) looking for a MSM convinced an Admiral that it should be mandatory.
ReplyDeleteFrom a fleet perspective I see this as another pain in the @$$ admin program that I have to ensure is completed, records kept, and possibly an item for a Desron (some other agency) to inspect. Ships have enough of those crappy little programs.
What we need are Sailors looking out for each other, and the roots of the program show that Sailors want and can do that. And maybe we should have just left it at that.
I don't know maybe Europe might not need to know about Typhoons or Hurricanes. Volcanos, earthquakes, terrorist groups, revoultions etc. But like I said above this program should have stayed at the local level where the regional commands could have tailored it as they saw fit. Every year there is a new problem in each region, so why not just be allowed to tailor the training towards that need. Instead it is going to be some rubber stamp, mando-fun that will have to hit each of those topics listed in the msg by the end of the year. I can't wait for my quarterly safety stand downs to get longer
ReplyDeleteTouche!
ReplyDeleteHah, thanks, I thought I had seen the last of this when I hit delete on the message in my inbox after reading the subject line. Now I have read the whole thing and am stupider for having done so. When is somebody going to put the bright idea fairy back in her cage so we can get some work done?
ReplyDeleteMTH, That's because he's probably an "E-9" and NOT a "Master Chief.
ReplyDeleteThe Magpul Massada works just fine and can even fire after dunked in a pool of water. That's the stuff we need (plus it has interchangeable barrels so you fire 5.56 or 7.62). The trouble is that frequently COs won't let their soldiers pick what gear they want. A unit grabbed a bunch of German rifles from some insurgents but had to hand them over.
ReplyDeleteI have a question now that this is going to be mando-fun. Anyone have any bets on how fast our E-5 and below eyes are going to roll in the back of thier head during the mando-lectures during the quarterly safety stand downs. I mean I already have a problem herding the cats to those things as it is to spend three plus hours in death by power point for the quarter.
ReplyDeleteAlso how soon till there is an NKO/E-learning lesson guide that will be mando for everyone to understand their roles in this program? I am calling it in three months from DTG of this message before there will be mando classes on NKO about this.
That is exactly the point. Most of these garbage programs, from the Business Enterprise stuff to Lafleur's SeaSwap, to this diversity BS are all designed to create Fitrep bullets. Change for Change's sake. Thirty years ago, someone putting a message or program like this would have gotten a slap to the back of the head and told everybody knows this, stop looking for recognition, and get back to work. Now this idiot is a hero. Gee, we never knew abusing your wife or kids was bad for business. The Navy is becoming (or maybe already has) the Boy Scouts. While we can laugh at that, the part you can't laugh at is the cost to readiness that all this candy-ass stuff takes on.
ReplyDeleteSigh....

There are over 130 Active Chapters and a Great idea which continues to grow without too much influence from above! Funding is a concern as Chapters are finding creative ways to spread the word. It has not changed from what the program was initially driven to become, everyone here knows you need support of the program from the higher ups, if not the program will not even move forward! (No time off, what are you doing, is this an approved Navy program, why do we need it, and the list goes on) Instead of posting negative comments, you should be supporting the program and helping it to succeed instead of enjoying watching another program that could actually benefit Junior Sailors fail!
